Dwyer Secures Late Game Winner in Men’s Lacrosse 11-10 Win Over Hobart

PHILADELPHIA – A back and forth contest on Saturday afternoon saw the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team rescue a late win over Hobart, using a game winning goal in the final minutes to edge the Statesmen 11-10 on Sweeney Field.

SJU now holds an 18-game conference win streak, including a 3-0 start to life in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks are on a four-game win streak to move to 8-4. Hobart falls to 5-6, 1-2 in the A-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks looked to make quick work, establishing a 4-0 lead after just seven minutes of action. It took just nine seconds after Zach Cole won the opening face-off, gathered the return pass from Michael Gaughan before firing home to give the Hawks an early lead.
  • Colin Reich made it two for the Hawks moments later, going unassisted to find the back of the net. Shortly after, a pair of rare goal scorers made their presence known to the Hawk faithful.
  • Cole Peters finished off shot after Carter Page found the senior, making no mistake for his second goal of the season. Matt Popeck would find Christian Marchini moments later as the rookie earned his first career goal to put the Hawks up by four.
  • The Statesmen would tally one back in the first before neither team were able to make anything happen over the final 6:30 of the first quarter.
  • Hobart tallied the first goal of the second quarter, but after a near 14-minute goal drought from the Hawks, Levi Anderson would answer the call for his 31st tally of the season. More back and forth between the two sides saw another pair of goals traded, Carter Page getting on the score sheet for the 24th consecutive game. Hobart tallied a late effort with two minutes in the half to cut the deficit to 6-4 in favor of the Crimson and Gray at half.
  • Mac McLaughlin returned a three-goal advantage for the Hawks early in the third, but back-to-back Hobart goals cut the lead to just one goal.
  • With an extra-man advantage, Anderson again found the back of the net to secure his 100th collegiate goal as the Hawks led 8-6.
  • Two more Hobart goals and a combined 4-2 advantage in the third quarter saw both teams level at 8-8 headed into the final 15 minutes.
  • With over six minutes of drought between the sides to begin play, Hobart's James Greene capitalized on an extra man opportunity to give the Statesmen their first lead of the game.
  • The Hawks countered, Anderson securing a hat trick just under two minutes later. Off the ensuing face-off, Cole once again found success and raced down field. The midseason USILA All-American found the back of the net and St. Joe's once again found the lead.
  • With Hobart responding with a strike with 2:45 remaining, inclement weather loomed as the rain started to come down. Unfazed, graduate transfer Stephen Dwyer went on a solo run away from the goal as he fired. The shot rocketed past the Hobart goalkeeper and into the top corner for the lead.
  • Winning the ensuing face-off, the Hawks were able to drain valuable time before taking a shot clock violation. On the other end, the Hawks were able to force pressure throughout the possession, forcing a wide attempt on goal before running out the clock to move to 3-0 in league play.

GAME NOTES
  • Carter Page has now scored in 24 consecutive games, tallying 77 goals in that span.
  • Leading the team with a hat trick, Levi Anderson became just the eighth Hawk to surpass 100 career goals, moving into eighth all-time in Hawk history with 101 goals on his career. Matt Bohmer sits just five goals ahead of him at fifth all-time, while Carter Page is looming on the list with 95 career goals to his name.
  • Bohmer finished with three assists on the afternoon.
  • Zach Cole recorded his third multi-goal game of his career, the second of the season. Cole also went 16-24 from the X, sitting three shy of 1,000 career face-off wins.
  • Shayne Ryan's impressive return to the cage saw the redshirt-freshman record nine saves, eight coming in the opening half.
  • The Hawks have now won 18-straight conference games, including the last 15 games in the NEC and the first three in their new home in the Atlantic 10.
  • SJU edged Hobart in both shots (50-41) and shots on goal (24-19). A combined 13 penalties were called on the two teams.

UP NEXT
  • The Hawks return to Sweeney Field for senior day on April 22, taking on Massachusetts in a 3:30 p.m. face-off.
