PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team stuffed a late five-goal comeback attempt from Davidson, pushing past the Wildcats in a 16-15 double overtime thriller as the Hawks celebrated their senior day with a victory on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
The five-game win streak for the Hawks (9-6, 6-1 A-10) is the longest since 2018, St. Joe's rattling off seven-straight to end the regular season. The win also keeps the Hawks in contention for the regular season title, Davidson falling to 10-4 on the year and 5-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visitors found the back of the net first, striking early from Grace Fahey.
- Just 30 seconds later, the score was level once more as Emma O'Neill returned to the starting lineup with an early equalizer.
- The goal would spark a 3-0 run over nine minutes of play as Lisa Ross found space before firing into the netting. Riley Evans would get on the board, found by midfield counterpart Bonnie Yu before scoring past the Davidson goalkeeper to lead 3-1.
- The Wildcats found a goal of their own with 14 seconds remaining in the first quarter to decrease the deficit to one goal.
- Just 49 seconds into the second frame, Maddie Yoder tallied her first of the game as the sophomore took advantage of her free position opportunity. With a player advantage, Davidson tallied a response just moments later.
- However, an assist from Ross to freshman Kate Fuhrman restored the two-goal lead before Yu turned goal scorer with her 28th of the season.
- Fahey once again connected on a strike to cut the Hawk lead to 6-4, but Alexa Capozzoli responded as the rookie tallied two goals in the span of 39 seconds to double up the Wildcats.
- SJU would push the advantage to as large as five in the first half, goals from Maggie Davidson and Yoder giving SJU a 10-5 lead with just under three minutes in the first half. Davidson once again responded late in the quarter, finishing with just over a minute on the clock to cut the Hawk advantage to 10-6 at the half.
- After trading goals to start the third quarter, Maggie Davidson restored the four-goal advantage with just over eight minutes on the clock as the sophomore finished home from an O'Neill assist.
- The Wildcats responded with a 4-1 run over the final 6:10 of the quarter, Capozzoli providing the only interruption of the run to grab a hat trick as SJU took a narrow 12-11 margin into the final frame.
- A moment of magic gave the Hawks another two-goal advantage with the Hawks playing with a numbers disadvantage. As the shot clock closed in on the Crimson and Gray, Fuhrman tried finding Ross making a cut near the front of the crease. Unable to handle it, a deflection from Ross' stick was enough to throw off the Wildcat goalkeeper as the ball trickled into the back of the cage.
- The goal would start a run of six goals traded between the two teams, Yoder tallying her third and fourth goals in that frame.
- The alternating goals ended as Davidson capitalized and tied the game at 15-15 with 1:30 on the clock. The Wildcats won the ensuing draw control but were unable to capitalize as the Hawks forced a turnover before unable to find enough time to race down the field to find a winner, forcing the game into extra time.
- In the first overtime, no shots were taken in the first three minutes as both teams traded turnovers. Capozzoli would ring the post, the ball spinning away back into the stick of a Hawk attack before the possession fizzled out.
- Once again, the Hawks were able to get a turnover and gain possession as Bella Schorr raced down the field, fired from close, but saw her effort matched by the Davidson shot stopper as the clock struck zero while second overtime loomed.
- An early shot attempt from Bella Miceli again was denied, but the defense of the Hawks continued to show up in the late stages as SJU forced an uncomfortable shot attempt that was blocked by the Hawk defenders. Racing towards the other end, Ross would pick apart the Wildcat defense to find Capozzoli as the freshman turned and fired home, the net rippling with the game winner as the team raced on the field with the fans inside Sweeney Field going into a frenzy.
- St. Joe's walked away with the double-overtime victory, outlasting the Wildcats in a 16-15 thriller to increase their win streak to five in a row.
