Women’s Lacrosse Second Half Surge Falls Short to #13 UMass

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team used a 6-2 advantage in the third quarter to propel back into the game, but the comeback attempt fell short against #13 Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

The five-game win streak for the Hawks was cut short, SJU falling to 9-7 on the year and 6-2 in Atlantic 10 play. UMass continues its now 13-game win streak and remains unblemished in conference play, sitting at 14-1 (8-0 A-10).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors jumped to a quick start, scoring the opening four goals of the game to take a commanding lead.
  • Maddie Yoder stopped the Minutewomen run, converting from a free-position shot to get the Hawks on the board. Yoder doubled her tally moments later, Sydney Foster dishing the ball to a cutting Yoder who found the back of the net.
  • UMass responded, scoring with seconds left to take a 5-2 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
  • Bonnie Yu scored for the 15th-straight game, making a solo run before finding space past the Massachusetts goalkeeper to again cut the deficit to two.
  • UMass responded with five of the next six goals, Riley Evans finding the netting from another Foster assist to disrupt the Minutewomen scoring. The Hawks trailed heading into the half by a 10-4 margin.
  • Bonnie Yu and Yoder traded goals with the Minutewomen over the opening six minutes of the quarter, still trailing by six with a 12-6 disadvantage.
  • However, a four-goal streak without interruption with just under five minutes remaining in the third saw the Hawks grow right back into the game.
  • Freshman Alexa Capozzoli, making a start after back-to-back Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards, found a pair of assists in 43 seconds after Foster was rewarded with a goal of her own before Evans finished her second of the afternoon.
  • Yoder recorded her fourth goal with jist over a minute remaining in the frame, before Capozzoli turned assister to provider to get on the scoreboard with 18 seconds left to narrow the margin to 12-10.
  • As the Minutewomen started the final quarter with an early goal, Capozzoli responded yet again with her second of the game just 23 seconds later. Capozzoli would again respond to a UMass goal with four minutes to play, taking advantage of a non-releasable yellow card from a Minutewoman defender to give SJU a woman advantage.
  • UMass were able to get a stop on their end with the disadvantage, grabbing a goal that would seal the ball game with 2:15 remaining on the clock to help UMass escape with a 15-12 win.

  • Maddie Yoder continues to lead the team in scoring, her four goals pushing her to 34 on the season.
