RICHMOND, Va. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fell to VCU on Saturday afternoon, conceding six goals in the final 15 minutes to drop a 17-12 contest in the regular season finale.
The Hawks locked up the #3 spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament prior to the game, falling to 9-8 (6-3 Atlantic 10) on the year. VCU improved to 8-9 (4-5 Atlantic 10).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The hosts struck first, finding the back of the net through a free-position opportunity to take an early lead just under two minutes into the contest.
- Sydney Foster answered the call moments later, driving through traffic before a low effort bounced past the keeper and into the netting to level the scoring.
- A three-goal burst from the Rams came to an end as the Hawks ended a near seven-minute drought to cut the deficit as Alexa Capozzoli tallied her first of the day.
- Maddie Yoder turned provider for Capozzoli to goal scorer to respond to another Ram goal with just a minute left on the clock, the Hawks trailing 5-3 after the opening 15 minutes of action.
- Kate Fuhrman took the game to her hands in the second quarter after returning to the squad after missing action against UMass. Tallying her first goal with 11:20 remaining in the second quarter, the freshman completed her hat trick just two minutes later. Tallying her fourth-consecutive Hawk goal just over a minute later, the rookie turned the game around to give the Hawks a 7-5 advantage.
- Despite the momentum swing, the Rams punched back. Scoring three goals in the next two minutes and change, the sisters Mia and Juliana George combined to regain the advantage for VCU with four minutes to play.
- Bonnie Yu tallied her first of the game to extend her goal streak to 16 games, but VCU responded to take a 9-8 advantage headed into the half.
- The Hawks came out for the third quarter for two quick strikes from Bonnie Yu and Fuhrman to take an early second half lead, but the hosts swarmed back.
- Taking an 11-10 advantage into the final 15 minutes, VCU outscored the Hawks 6-2 over the fourth quarter, defeating St. Joe's 17-12 on the final game of the regular season.
GAME NOTES
- Kate Fuhrman led the Hawks with a career-high five goals in her return back to action. 10 of her 19 goals on the season have come in conference play.
- Bonnie Yu continued to shine with her 16th consecutive game with at least a goal, tallying a hat trick in the loss.
- Alexa Capozzoli, coming off of three-consecutive Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week awards, produced another strong outing with a goal and a career-best four assists against the Rams.
- Lisa Ross continues to lead St. Joe's in assists on the year, adding two more to her account. Ross has 46 on her career, two shy of ninth place Maggie Egan (2014-17).
- The Hawks forced 20 turnovers, but were also bit by the turnover bug with 18 of their own.
- VCU held a slim margin in shots (34-32) and shots on goal (26-22).
- The win for the Rams was the first in program history over the Hawks in seven opportunities.
