MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team dropped a midweek contest against crosstown rival Penn, 18-6, at Smithson Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Penn (14-10) got on the board first with a five-run second inning.
Â
• The Quakers would add one in the fifth before Saint Joseph's (10-14) clawed back with a pair in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by
Ryan Cesarini and a sacrifice fly by
Nate Thomas.
Â
• Penn tacked on a pair of its own in the top of the sixth, but the Hawks scored three in the bottom half to get back into the game.Â
Brett Callahan singled home a run with the bases loaded before a sac fly from
Colin Myers cut the deficit to 8-4; a throwing error on the play by the Quakers allowed a second run to score and cut it to a three-run game.
Â
• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Quakers hung a seven-spot on the board in the seventh, and while a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning would bring home another run for SJU, the visitors would score three more in the ninth to set the final margin.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• John Cerwinski was the winning pitcher for Penn, allowing one hit in three shutout innings.Â
Mike Picollo took the loss after being charged with five runs in two innings.
Â
•
Max Hitman went 3-for-4 on the day and scored a pair of runs.
