PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team fought off a St. Bonaventure team looking for its first win over the Hawks in the last eight attempts, coming back from two goals in the fourth for a 13-11 win on Sweeney Field on Saturday afternoon.
St. Joe's has now tallied a season-best four-straight wins, moving to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in Atlantic 10 play. St. Bonaventure falls to 4-9 and 2-4 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lisa Ross capitalized early for the Hawks, taking advantage of an opening for the first goal of the game.
- The Bonnies responded with a strike of their own to level the scoring, but Riley Evans soon countered with her first goal of the afternoon to return the Hawks to an early advantage. Maddie Yoder would double up the lead, taking advantage with a free-position shot.
- Coming off a spectacular performance against #18 Princeton, Alexa Capozzoli again found the back of the net with her fifth goal in the past four days to put the Hawks up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
- Bonnie Yu traded goals with Bonnies attacker Jessica Notaro over the opening two minutes, but the Hawks offense would go dormant over the final 13 minutes. St. Bonaventure capitalized with three-straight goals to enter the half with a lead over St. Joe's. 6-5.
- On the other end of the intermission, it was once again the visitors who found the offense as St. Bonaventure continued what would be a 5-0 run, scoring two goals in the opening five minutes of the third quarter.
- The Hawks finally stopped the bleeding as Kate Fuhrman connected from a free-position shot. Nearly two minutes later, Yoder tallied her second of the day as she also capitalized on her free-position attempt to cut the deficit.
- Trailing by one, the Hawks were able to get a stop after a yellow card put the Hawks a woman down. That wouldn't deter the Crimson and Gray, countering and connecting as the freshman Fuhrman found Evans for a quick strike to level the score.
- With 22 seconds left in the third, the Hawks would again take the lead as Capozzoli found the net to tally the fourth-consecutive goal for SJU.
- The visitors stormed back at the start of the fourth, using a three-goal swing to alter the balance as the Bonnies struck home three times in as many minutes to take an 11-9 lead.
- Capozzoli scored twice in a span of 34 seconds, securing her third and fourth goal as the Hawks leveled the action with six minutes remaining.
- Despite the Hawks finding the back of the net as Sydney Foster found a teammate for a goal, the refs had waved off the goal due to a previously called foul. Foster turned provider to scorer, finishing home from her free-position opportunity to give the Hawks a lead with four minutes to play.
- A Bonnies turnover gave the Hawks another possession, allowing the hosts to kill the clock before Ross found Mallory Jubb who finished off balance to secure a victory on Sweeney Field, the Hawks walking out 13-11 winners to move to 5-1 in conference play.
