MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team punched its ticket to the Atlantic 10 Championship on Saturday with a 12-6 over Rhode Island. In the game,
Nate Thomas tied the program record for career home runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rhode Island (20-26 overall, 10-10 Atlantic 10) took a 2-0 lead for the second day in a row, plating a pair in the top of the third on a single by Alex Ramirez and a double by Billy Butler.
•
Ryan Cesarini got the Hawks on the board in the bottom of the frame with a home run over the bullpens in right field.
• Saint Joseph's (24-20-1 overall, 14-6 Atlantic 10) went ahead with a five-run fourth. With the bases loaded and nobody out,
Brandon Drapeau singled home a run to tie the game. Two batters later,
Brett Callahan cleared the bases with a three-run triple to put the Hawks on top 5-2 before scoring on a groundout by
Conlan Wall.
• URI got one back on a sacrifice fly from Michael Anderson in the fifth before Thomas went deep in the bottom of the inning to restore the four-run lead.
• The Rams tallied again in the sixth on an RBI groundout from Addison Kopack and cut the margin to pair on a seventh-inning double by Anthony DePino.
• The Hawks added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth as Callahan drew a bases-loaded walk before an RBI single by Wall, a two-run double by Cesarini, and a sac fly by
Justin Igoe pushed the lead to 12-5.
• The visitors benefited from a pair of errors in the ninth to push across a run and set the final margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
•
Ryan DeSanto tossed five strong innings, allowing three runs – only one of them earned – on three hits while striking out four to improve to 3-1 on the season. Trystan Levesque was charged with six runs on five hits in three and a third innings to fall to 5-4.
• The Hawks drew five walks against Levesque, who had only issued 13 free passes in 68 innings entering Saturday's game.
• Thomas matched the career record of 43 home runs set by
Andrew Cossetti a season ago.
• Callahan led the Hawks with four runs batted in, while Cesarini added three more. Four different Hawks scored multiple runs.
• Via the win, the Hawks clinched a trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship for the third consecutive season; prior to last year's berth, the Hawks had never reached the A-10 postseason in back-to-back seasons.
• Saturday's game marked Senior Day, when the Hawks honored managers Nino Aquino and Kyle Pinkava, social media manager Kate Maginnis, and student-athletes
