PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team saw a two-game win streak come to a close on Tuesday evening, Delaware scoring twice in the second half to erase a deficit as the Hawks fell 2-1 to the Blue Hens on Sweeney Field.
Blake Driehuis continued his good form, but his opener proved consolation only as the Hawks fall to 2-4 on the year. Delaware remains unbeaten, moving to 5-0-1 to start the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks' first chance came in the opening 10 minutes as Bart Kooistra drove down the right side before firing across goal to an incoming Blake Driehuis. The deflection fell to the foot of Truls Brændvang before a Blue Hen defender was able to deflect the shot out for a corner.
- Lars Haavie recorded his first save of the night on the 15th minute, a tame free kick finding the hands of the Norwegian comfortably.
- Haavie was once again called into action on the 30th minute, denying Sam Donnellan of the opener as the sliding effort forced the ball out for a visitor corner kick.
- Kooistra found another opportunity to create some early offense, nearly capitalizing off a defensive mistake by Delaware as his left footed curling effort forced Eddie DeMarco to save at full stretch to deny the forward.
- Half chances by both sides saw neither team able to break the deadlock as they entered into the half with a 0-0 scoreline.
- The Hawks opened the scoring through none other than Driehuis, tallying his fifth in three games to give St. Joe's a lead. Kooistra found himself involved, gathering a loose ball off a corner before firing into the box. A looped ball from Alex Hartmann found the path of Driehuis who nodded past the keeper.
- The lead proved short lived as Delaware responded nearly instantaneously, Carlos Fernandez gathering a rebounded save off of Haavie to slot low and past the goalkeeper to equalize for the Blue Hens.
- An extraordinary effort from Haavie kept the score tied at 1-1 after the Blue Hens found a direct path to goal. A reflex save as he rushed onto the path was able to see the attempt harmless travel over the net and out for a corner kick.
- Haavie could do nothing about the strike in the 75th minute that put the visitors in the lead, Einar Hardarson thundering an effort from range into the top left corner as the Blue Hens took the 2-1 lead.
- The goal would separate the teams as St. Joe's attacks throughout the final 15 minutes came to no avail as Delaware upended a two-game win streak for the Crimson and Gray.
