MERION STATION, Pa. – Seven different Hawks lit up the scoreboard on Friday afternoon as the 13th-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team trounced Saint Louis, 8-0, at a cool and overcast Ellen Ryan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (9-2 overall, 3-0 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring two minutes into the game when
Erika Culp, making her first start in the Crimson and Gray, tipped a ball from
Leigh James past SLU's Kendyl Underwood for an early lead.
• James got on the board herself with five minutes to go in the first quarter, as a ball from
Katelyn Cocco was redirected to James by
Manu Ghigliotti, doubling the lead. Ghigliotti then netted one of her own with a minute to play in the frame to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead after one quarter.
• Saint Louis (1-8 overall, 0-3 Atlantic 10) kept the Hawks at bay in the second until the six-minute mark.Â
Sol Borensztein bagged her first goal of the season on a corner before
Kate Crist scored the first goal of her collegiate career on another corner two minutes later. Ghigliotti then lofted a loose ball high over Underwood and into the cage a minute and a half to go to send the Hawks into the break leading by six.
•
Lily Santi converted a penalty stroke early in the third quarter to extend the margin before
Ciara Margetich scored her first career goal on a rebound to set the final margin.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Underwood made six saves in the first half for the Billikens, while Kerri O'Donnell made seven in the second.Â
Janelle Ward and
Marith Bijkerk split time in the cage for Saint Joseph's.
• The Hawks outshot the Billikens 27-0 on Friday, the third time this season that SJU has held an opponent to two shots or fewer and the third time in the last two seasons the Hawks have held the opposition without an attempt.
• SJU earned seven penalty corners in the game, and for a cherry on top of the sundae, did not concede any to the Billikens.
• The eight goals tie a program record for goals scored in a game at home, and the margin of victory matches the highest in program history.
