Early Strikes Prove Costly in Men’s Soccer 2-1 Defeat to Duquesne

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell down early and were unable to overcome a quick two goal deficit to Duqesne in a 2-1 defeat on Sweeney Field on Saturday evening.

St. Joe's falls to 3-7-1 (1-1-1 Atlantic 10) on the season, while Duquesne moves to 5-2-2 (2-0-1 Atlantic 10).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With neither team threatening over the course of the opening 10 minutes, the visitors struck first on the first shot of the game in the 13th minute. Midfielder Ask Ekeland struck a long-range effort, a massive deflection off a Hawk defender leaving goalkeeper Lars Haavie planted as he had no choice but to watch the ball hit the back netting to give the visitors an early lead.
  • Ekeland doubled his tally only minutes later, finishing on a platter from a ball played across the middle that originally started from a deep cross from the defense as St. Joe's fell 2-0 behind in the first 17 minutes.
  • Mikkel Andersen proved closest for the Hawks to get a foot into the game, doing well to beat a man before cutting into the field on his right foot. The senior lashed ashot that went just wide, the Duquesne goalkeeper doing well to have it covered.
  • The Hawks started strong in the second half, getting an early reward for their endeavors through James Fletcher. The Australian midfielder finished off a flurry of one-touch passes as Blake Driehuis played it into the path of Truls Brændvang, leaving it for his midfield counterpart to finish first time into the back of the net.
  • The Hawks nearly equalized in the 80th minute as a cutback pass from Driehuis found the boot of Bart Kooistra. The Dutchman shifted the ball to his favored right foot, but the hurried shot sailed over the bar and out for a goal kick.
  • Chaos ensued in the final 10 minutes as a combined four yellow cards were issued amongst the two teams as well as a red card for Matias Mancini which forced the Hawks to play the final three and a half minutes with 10 men.
  • An equalizer nearly was found from the hosts as Driehuis had a free kick blocked by the wall. An ensuing corner kick saw the ball redistributed out wide. James Fletcher found a target in the form of Haavie, the goalkeeper sprinting to join the final attack. The Norwegian's diving header blasted just wide of the goal as Duquesne were able to wipe out the final 20 seconds en route to a 2-1 victory.

QUICK NOTES
  • Fletcher recorded his first goal of the season, becoming the fifth Hawk to register a goal on the year. The strike was his sixth of his career.
  • Brændvang recorded his third assist of the season while Driehuis was also credited with a helper.
  • St. Joe's held a 12-8 advantage in shots, but both shots on target for the Dukes found the back of the net.
  • The Hawks also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
