PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team fell for the first time in Atlantic 10 play, ending its five-game win streak as Richmond took a 64-59 win inside Hagan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks fall to 13-2 (2-1 A-10) on the year while Richmond improves to 13-3 and a 3-0 start to conference play.
FIRST QUARTER
- The Hawks opened with only 2-7 from the field to start, but were able to ride out the early offensive woes with a strong defensive effort after Talya Brugler's and-one tied the game at five.
- Continuing to match baskets with the Spiders, the Hawks were finally able to take the first lead of the game after Brugler was found wide open under the basket to put the hosts up 12-10.
- Another jumper from Brugler and a three from the wing by Chloe Welch extended the run to 10-0 and forced a timeout from Richmond.
- Richmond responded, holding St. Joe's scoreless over the final 1:48 of the frame and knocking down two threes to cut the deficit to 17-16 after the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- St. Joe's scored six of the first nine points in the quarter, but the three-ball from Richmond proved effective as the Spiders knocked down three of their first five attempts to take a 25-23 lead before Mackenzie Smith countered with a tough drive to the rim.
- The two teams continued trading punches, matching each other step for step until a 4-0 burst from Richmond put the Spiders up 33-29 in the final minute.
- The Hawks grabbed the final points of the quarter, Chloe Welch connecting on a three from the wing to cut the deficit to one for the Hawks.
- St. Joe's took just its third deficit into halftime, heading into the lockers down 33-32.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Spiders made five of their first six baskets of the quarter to open up a 10-4 advantage to start the third.
- Richmond flirted with a double-digit lead on multiple occasions, but the Hawks responded each time. Trailing by seven with a minute to go, Smith started and finished a quick 6-0 run over30 seconds to cut the visitor lead to one.
- Richmond responded with the final basket of the frame as time was expiring to put the Spiders up 52-49 with 10 minutes to play.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Both offenses started cold in the final frame, each team scoring four points over the first five and a half minutes of the quarter as Richmond maintained the three-point advantage.
- The Hawks were able to draw within one once more, Smith once again driving to the basket and finding paydirt to cut the lead to 58-57 for the visitors.
- After a possession by both teams went without fruition, Maggie Doogan sank a three pointer for the visitors with 42 seconds left to put the Spiders up four.
- The Hawks looked to extend the game out by fouling, but Richmond was able to put away its free throws and taking a 64-59 victory inside of Hagan Arena.
GAME NOTES
- Talya Brugler finished with a game-high 17 points on the afternoon.
- Mackenzie Smith and Laura Ziegler both ended the game in double figures, Smith tallying 14 points and six rebounds. Ziegler posted 11 points and seven rebounds on the game.
- Emma Boslet added five rebounds, five assists and three steals, now posting 10 assists with zero turnovers in her last two games.
- St. Joe's finished with one of its worst shooting performances of the season, knocking down just 25-64 (39.1%) attempts from the field and 3-18 (16.7%) from distance.
- Richmond posted a 45.1% effort from the field on 23-51 field goals, hitting 9-22 (40.9%) from distance.
- For the first time in the last eight matchups in the series, the visiting team won. Richmond grabbed its first win inside Hagan Arena after starting 0-8.
