PHILADELPHIA – A pair of goals separated by just three minutes proved the difference as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory against Mount St. Mary's, celebrating Senior Night on Tuesday evening on Sweeney Field.
Prior to the game, the Hawks honored eight seniors for Senior Night:
Lars Haavie,
Brandon Barrett, Truls Brændvang,
Blake Driehuis,
Bart Kooistra,
Jan Golinski,
Campbell McIntyre and
Kobe Perlaza.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mount St. Mary's recorded the first shot on goal in the early stages of the game. The visitors found space for a shot but the looping attempt fell into the hands of senior goalkeeper Lars Haavie.
- The Hawks broke a scoring drought that lasted nearly 290 minutes after Blake Driehuis netted his fourth goal of the season. After a long free kick cleared the entire defense, Luke Johnson picked up the loose ball and crossed it in from the touchline onto Driehuis' head before the senior guided it into the netting.
- The two linked up only three minutes later on a counter attack as Johnson played a through ball into the path of Driehuis. The forward from New Zealand sent a low driven pass back into the middle in front of an oncoming Matteo Mazzotta. The Italian adjusted to the ball taking a late hop off the turf and one-touched his attempt from outside of the box with his weaker left foot, curling his effort to the far corner to put the hosts up 2-0 inside 18 minutes.
- Daniel Zivkovic nearly scored a third goal for St. Joe's in the 35th minute. The sophomore stretched out to try and get his shot off before a Mountaineer defender put in a foot to block the attempt. On the ground, Zivkovic was able to get to the rebound first as his second attempt beat the goalkeeper before it agonizingly passed wide of the post to go out for a goal kick.
- Taking a 2-0 lead into the half, the Hawks continued to control the game throughout the second stanza of action. St. Joe's didn't allow a shot on target past the sixth minute of the contest.
- Patrick Vani tested the Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper on two occasions in the final 20 minutes. Truls Brændvang also nearly grabbed a goal of his own but was denied by the visiting shot stopper to minimize the damage on the night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Blake Driehuis scored his fourth goal of the season (18th of his career). The senior netted his seventh-career game winner with the opening strike in the 15th minute. Driehuis also earned an assist to register three points on the night.
