Men’s Soccer Falls to George Mason, 4-1

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 result to George Mason at Sweeney Field on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Mason opened the scoring in the eighth minute off its first attempt on target. Luis Maestre curled his free kick from 25 yards out to the top corner to give the Patriots the lead.
  • The Patriots (11-3, 5-1 A-10) doubled their lead in the 17th minute after an attacker drove to the touchline and sent a driven cross into the box. The ball deflected off a St. Joe's defender and through the traffic into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
  • Held without a shot over the first 45 minutes, the Hawks (3-11-1, 0-6 A-10) recorded a pair of quick attempts in the second half to nearly cut the deficit to one. Blake Driehuis won the Hawks a corner kick before the set piece was headed just wide from Luke Johnson.
  • The visitors added a third goal as Lars Haavie made an outstretched save to parry the first attempt on a Patriot counter attack. Marek Gonda was the first to get to the rebound and tapped it in from close range for a 3-0 lead.
  • George Mason made it 4-0 after converting from the penalty spot in the 60th minute.
  • The Patriots were reduced to 10 men after a red card was issued to Henry Wachsman. Five minutes later, the Hawks earned a goal after Matteo Mazzotta rocketed a left-footed strike into the top corner for his second goal in as many games.
  • The Hawks were forced to 10 men for the final seven minutes after Mazzotta was given his second yellow card of the evening. The teams remained scoreless over the final stretch as the whistle blew with a 4-1 advantage in favor of the visitors.
