Hawks Use Balanced Effort to Down Delaware State

PHILADELPHIA – Four players scored in double figures as the Saint Joseph's men's basketball team downed Delaware State 76-58 on Saturday afternoon.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Erik Reynolds II led the Hawks with 22 points, adding four assists, three rebounds and a block. It was his third consecutive game with 20 or more points.
  • Rasheer Fleming had his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. He also had a career-high five assists along with three steals.
  • Dasear Haskins netted 12 with a personal best seven boards.
  • Derek Simpson dished a career-high nine assists, adding 12 points.
  • As a team, Saint Joseph's had 21 assists on 27 made baskets. The 77.8 assist percentage is the Hawks highest of the season.
  • SJU held the Hornets to 0-for-8 from three-point range. It is the first time a Saint Joseph's opponent did not hit a trey since December 18, 2013 against Drexel.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams got off to a slow start as Delaware State took a brief 6-5 lead before an 8-0 run by St. Joe's that included threes by Reynolds and Mekai Johnson put the Hawks up 13-6 at the 14:05 mark.
  • While SJU started to heat up offensively, it kept up the defensive pressure, holding the Hornets to five for their first 25 from the floor.
  • As the half wore on, the teams played an even remainder of the frame with Saint Joseph's taking a 33-20 lead at intermission. Seven different players scored for the Hawks in the stanza and SJU had 10 assists on 11 made field goals.
  • Delaware State stayed within shouting distance for the first eight minutes of the second half, trailing 45-34 at the 8:33 mark.
  • From that point it was all St. Joe's, going 11-for-15 from the floor for the remainder of the game, extending the lead to as many as 20.

The Hawks close the 2024 calendar year and opens Atlantic 10 Conference action hosting the UMass Minutemen on Tuesday, December 31. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
