Hawks Win 22nd Big 5 Championship

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's Hawks men's basketball team used a blistering second half shooting performance to win its 22nd  Philadelphia Big 5 title, downing the La Salle Explorers 82-68 in the Toyota Big 5 Classic championship game on Saturday night.

For his efforts throughout pod play and the Big 5 Classic, Erik Reynolds II was named MVP.

 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Reynolds II scored 24 in the game. He now has 1,755 career points, moving into sixth on the Hawks' all-time list, passing Craig Amos (1988-92). He also added four assists and three rebounds.
  • Xzayvier Brown netted 21 in the game. He has now recorded double figures in points in each game this season. H dished six assists in the contest.
  • Rasheer Fleming had nine points and 10 rebounds.
  • Justice Ajogbor scored a season-high eight points. Derek Simpson and Dasear Haskins each also scored eight.
  • SJU shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) in the second half.
  • The Hawks also had assists on 22 of 32 made baskets. The 68.7 percent assist rate is eight percent higher than their season average.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saint Joseph's started well on the defensive end, holding the Explorers to 2-for-10 shooting, also coming up with a block and four steals in the initial eight minutes as SJU opened an 11-5 lead.
  • La Salle used an 8-1 run to take a brief edge, but starting with an acrobatic layup by Reynolds II, St. Joe's scored the next six in a row to go up 18-13 on a Fleming dunk at the 7:05 mark.
  • Another tie was forged with 85 seconds later, but Saint Joseph's responded, going on a 12-5 run to force a timeout by the Explorers with 1:56 remaining in the half.
  • In a half of runs, La Salle went on the final one, closing the gap to a single point before an old-fashioned three-point play by Dasear Haskins on a putback and free throw gave the Hawks a 33-29 at the break.
  • SJU came out with the jump in the second stanza, scoring eight of the first 10 points, taking a 40-31 advantage on a Justice Ajogbor alley oop dunk on a lob from Fleming.
  • St. Joe's continued to push the tempo, connecting on nine of its first 12 shots in the second half, taking its largest lead of the night to that point on an and one from Haskins, making it 57-43 with 12:21 left.
  • From there the Hawks methodically maintained their lead to come away with the win. 
 
UP NEXT
The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, December 10 when they host the College of Charleston. Tipoff from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
