Softball Splits Opening Games At Camel Stampede

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's softball team split the opening two games of the Camel Stampede on Friday as the Hawks won game two, 7-2, over Winthrop after falling to Incarnate Word, 13-5, in six innings in the opener.

How It Happened - Game One
• Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as both Meghan Sinkus and Sierra Fretz were hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
• Riley York extended the lead to 4-0 later in the first with a two-run double that scored Sinkus and Hailey Malito.
• Incarnate Word answered back in the bottom half of the inning as they scored 10 runs on seven hits, and took advantage of three Hawk errors, to open a 10-4 advantage.
• The Cardinals extended their lead to 11-4 in the fifth as they executed a double steal of home and second.
• York scored on a RBI ground out by Jenna Wagner in the top of the sixth to make it 11-5.
• Incarnate Word struck for a pair of runs on defensive miscues to end the Hawks' comeback hopes.

Inside The Boxscore - Game One
• York was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple and two RBI.
• Malito was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
• Gianna Muhaw went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
• Emily Siler moved to 0-4 as she allowed four earned runs on six hits over 0.1 innings.
• Jules Scogna tossed 4.2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run, while striking out one.

How It Happened - Game Two
• Fretz gave Saint Joseph's a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double that scored Malito and Sarah Cancila.
• A pair of RBI singles by Kayla Tauber and Cancila opened up a 4-0 edge in the top of the second.
• York, Haley McMenamin and Shelby LaMont each singled and drove in a run during a three-run third for the Hawks as they opened a 7-0 advantage.
• A two-run double by Winthrop's Ansley Lee with two outs in the bottom of the seventh cut the Hawks' lead to 7-2.
• Saint Joseph's starter Wagner got the ensuing batter to ground out to end the contest.

Inside The Boxscore - Game Two
• Wagner picked up her first collegiate win, allowing two runs on nine hits, while striking out 10 in the complete game victory.
• McMenamin went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
• Cancila went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
• Malito was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

St. Joe's continues play at the Camel Stampede with two games on Saturday. The Hawks start the day with a 10:30 a.m. rematch versus Winthrop, followed by a 3:30 p.m. contest against host Campbell.
