PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team suffered defeat in its season opener, falling 16-3 to #9 Maryland on Sweeney Field on Friday evening.
The Hawks and Terps met for the third time in the last three years to begin the season, St. Joe's falling to 0-1 after head coach
Alex Kahoe's alma mater moved to 1-0 to begin the 2024 campaign.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After three minutes of gameplay without a score, the visitors struck with two quick goals to earn a quick advantage.
- St. Joe's was forced into a turnover on its first four opportunities, Alexa Capozzoli firing the first shot on target with under eight minutes to play to test the Maryland goalkeeper.
- Jorden Concordia recorded a pair of saves as the Hawks kept the ninth-ranked team in the country off the board for a seven-minute period but the offense was unable to capitalize.
- Four quick strikes in the final 3:30 saw the visitors ramp their lead to 6-0 after the opening frame.
- Goalless nearly seven minutes into the second, the Terps again found the back of the net to spark a 4-0 advantage to end the first half with a 10-0 lead.
- Just over a minute into the second half, the Hawks found the netting through Emma O'Neill, the senior cutting the deficit back down to single digits.
- Maryland quickly quelled the momentum with four goals over the next eight minutes to extend the advantage to 14-1.
- Lis Ross got her first tally of the season as Maddie Yoder lobbed a ball over a group of defenders to the grad student, Ross making no mess to fire past the onrushing goalie.
- Olivia McCloskey nabbed her first collegiate goal to make it back-to-back Hawk goals early in the fourth quarter.
- Maryland struck twice more over the final 15 minutes to take a 16-3 win on the opening day of the season.
GAME NOTES
- 12 of the 17 shots from St. Joe's were on frame, seven different players recording at least one shot.
- Jorden Concordia opened her campaign with a .484 save percentage on the evening, the senior adding 15 saves in the defeat.
- Bella Schorr recorded a team-high two caused turnovers with three ground balls in defense.
- The Terps established a 42-17 advantage in shots on the night, putting 31 attempts on frame.
