Softball Wins Opener At Purple-Gold Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Saint Joseph's softball team opened the Purple-Gold Invitational with a 6-0 victory on Friday, but fell to Appalachian State, 9-0, in five innings in game two.

How It Happened - Game One
• The Hawks got on the board with two runs in the top of the second, starting as Haley McMenamin scored on a throwing error by Youngstown State off a double by Morgan Lester.
• Lester came around to make it 2-0 later in the second on a RBI single by Kayla Tauber.
• Hailey Malito extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning as Gianna Muhaw scored.
• A sacrifice fly by Sierra Fretz pushed the Hawks' advantage to 4-0 as Malito came in to score.
• Sarah Cancila added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with a two-run single that score Malito and Muhaw to make it 6-0.
• In the circle, Emily Siler and Jules Scogna kept Youngstown State off balance, allowing just four hits in the combined shutout.

Inside The Boxscore - Game One
• Siler scattered three hits over 4.0 innings, while striking out two to improve to 2-5 on the year.
• Scogna allowed one hit over 3.0 innings of relief.
• Muhaw was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
• Malito was 1-for-3 with two runs scored,
• Cancila was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

How It Happened - Game Two
• Appalachian State got on the board with a four-run second inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Grace Barrett and a three-run home run by Peyton Darnell.
• A RBI single by Abby Cunningham and a bases-loaded walk by Darnell extended Appalachian State's lead to 6-0 in the third.
• Taylor Thorp connected on a two-run single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Olivia Cook made it 9-0 in the fifth.

Inside The Boxscore - Game Two
• Muhaw went 2-for-3.
• Riley York went 1-for-2 with a double.
• St. Joe's starter Jenna Wagner moved to 1-1 on the season as she allowed five earned runs over 2.2 innings.

The Hawks continue play at the Purple-Gold Invitational on Saturday as they take on host East Carolina (3 p.m.) and Appalachian State (5:30 p.m.).
