GREENVILLE, N.C. – Saint Joseph's softball team opened the Purple-Gold Invitational with a 6-0 victory on Friday, but fell to Appalachian State, 9-0, in five innings in game two.
How It Happened - Game One
• The Hawks got on the board with two runs in the top of the second, starting asÂ
Haley McMenamin scored on a throwing error by Youngstown State off a double by
Morgan Lester.
• Lester came around to make it 2-0 later in the second on a RBI single byÂ
Kayla Tauber.

Hailey Malito extended the lead to 3-0 in the third inning asÂ
Gianna Muhaw scored.
• A sacrifice fly byÂ
Sierra Fretz pushed the Hawks' advantage to 4-0 as Malito came in to score.

Sarah Cancila added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh with a two-run single that score Malito and Muhaw to make it 6-0.

Emily Siler and
Jules Scogna kept Youngstown State off balance, allowing just four hits in the combined shutout.

• Siler scattered three hits over 4.0 innings, while striking out two to improve to 2-5 on the year.
• Scogna allowed one hit over 3.0 innings of relief.
• Muhaw was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
• Malito was 1-for-3 with two runs scored,

How It Happened - Game Two
• Appalachian State got on the board with a four-run second inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Grace Barrett and a three-run home run by Peyton Darnell.
• A RBI single by Abby Cunningham and a bases-loaded walk by Darnell extended Appalachian State's lead to 6-0 in the third.
• Taylor Thorp connected on a two-run single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by Olivia Cook made it 9-0 in the fifth.
