Men’s Lacrosse Dominates in 15-6 Win Over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team have earned two wins in its last two games, using a dominant display on both sides to cruise to a 15-6 win over Drexel at Sweeney Field on Sunday afternoon.

St. Joe's limited the Dragons to just three goals on either side of the half that saw a mixture of snow flurries, sunshine and strong gusts throughout the contest. The Hawks move to 2-3 on the year, Drexel falling to 3-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks opened the first possession with a goal, Jesse Jason finding enough space to launch an attempt past the Dragon goalkeeper to give SJU an early lead.
  • A response from Drexel was quickly countered by Carter Page, Levi Anderson finding the diving attacker near the crease before Page cleanly finished the attempt.
  • Page doubled his tally with under six minutes to play as the Dragons once again had tied the game at 2-2 before the Canadian's strike.
  • Matt Bohmer dodged a defender and went down the alley to double the Hawk advantage at 4-2 before Page completed his first quarter hat trick with three seconds remaining, rebounding an attempt before finishing from close range behind his body to put the Hawks up 5-2 after one quarter.
  • Bohmer completed a 4-0 run from the Hawks five minutes into the second, a pick from Jason giving the Charlotte, N.C. native space to rifle his attempt to the top left frame.
  • The Dragons finally ended their drought a minute later, but the Hawk attack kept the pressure on throughout the final eight minutes of the half. Anderson played scorer after his earlier assist, finishing cleanly on his right side on the run away from goal to help charge another St. Joe's spurt.
  • Two more crafty finishes from Bohmer secured a first half hat trick, pushing his tally to four goals as the graduate student helped give the Hawks a 9-3 lead at the half.
  • A dominant display from the Hawk defense continued in the third, holding the Dragons scoreless through the frame. Page cashed in his fourth of the day after Jason's burst of speed dragged multiple defenders free, the redshirt freshman finding Page eight yards out before the senior buried the effort into the netting.
  • The Hawks capped off the eventual 6-0 run with a pole goal from defenseman Levi Verch, given the green light to head forward after a Drexel turnover. Verch grabbed the ball near midfield and drove straight down the middle, no one stepping up to the Canadian in transition as he coolly finished past the Dragon goalie.
  • Drexel used three quick goals to cut the lead to 12-6 with 11 minutes remaining in the fourth before a moment of magic from Toron Eccleston returned the momentum to the Hawks. After a slashing call helped put Eccleston to the ground, the graduate student was able to bounce home his attempt while still on the floor to spurn any chance of a comeback from the visitors.
  • The Hawks capitalized on a pair of extra man opportunities to finalize the scoring, Anderson and Jason both recording goals in the final frame to cap off a dominating 15-6 win over the Dragons.

  • Tommy Gross earned his second consecutive win, limited action his way allowing just four saves on the day on 10 shots on goal.
  • The Hawks posted a 46-26 shot advantage, including a 29-10 effort on frame. Despite the advantage in shots, the Hawks succumbed to a 7-23 effort from the X against the Dragons.
  • The Hawks are now 4-27 all-time against Drexel, the third win in the last six matchups against the Dragons. Prior to today's victory, all three Hawk wins have come in a 10-9 score.
