PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seeing a two-goal deficit with only two minutes to play, the Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team grabbed some late game heroics to push past Providence on Saturday afternoon in a 13-12 overtime thriller.
A pair of
Carter Page goals in the final two minutes tied the game with three seconds left in regulation before
Toron Eccleston's fourth goal of the game gave the Hawks their first overtime win since 2021.
St. Joe's moves to 5-3 on the year with a five-game win streak as Providence falls to 4-5 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Matt Bohmer opened the offense with a quick strike under a minute into the game, wrapping around the net before fending off a defender to find the back of the net.
- The hosts responded with three goals over the next four minutes, the Hawks being held out of the net for nearly 10 minutes before Carter Page was able to score past the goalkeeper on a second effort opportunity.
- Toron Eccleston tied the game at 3-3 less than a minute later, Levi Anderson finding his Canadian counterpart wide open to power it into the top netting.
- Eccleston doubled his tally in the early stages of the second quarter, backing down his defender before again unleashing a shot past the Providence goalkeeper.
- The grad transfer finished off his first half hat trick, Jesse Jason finding him wide open near the goalmouth to tuck home the shot as the Hawks took advantage of an extra-man opportunity.
- Page doubled his effort shortly after before Bohmer also grabbed his second goal of the afternoon to increase the Hawk advantage to 7-4.
- The hosts were able to get one goal back, St. Joe's taking a 7-5 lead into the half.
- Just 20 seconds into the second half, Jesse Jason breezed by his defenders to bounce home a shot to increase the advantage back to three.
- Providence drew it back within one, but Griffin Mallory extended the advantage to 9-7 after wrapping around the goal and finishing near the crease.
- The hosts continued to apply the pressure, leveling the score at 9-9 before Jason once again wiggled free and was able to dive short of the crease and place it off the post and into the net to regain the advantage.
- Leading by one into the final frame, the Hawks saw the lead diminish as three consecutive goals from the Friars gave the hosts a 12-10 lead with under two minutes to play.
- Gavin Tygh, who had a monstrous 22-29 day from the X, won possession following the Providence goal as the Hawks were able to cut the deficit to one with a minute remaining.
- Another face-off win from Tygh gave the Hawks an opportunity to send it into overtime, and with three seconds remaining Anderson found Page for his fourth goal of the game as the senior leapt in the air and faked the goalkeeper before firing it home with three seconds left to force extra time.
- In overtime, St. Joe's won the face-off and were given the first opportunity to strike. The Hawks were unable to take advantage before being called for a shot clock violation.
- Providence took its turn in the attack, the Hawk defense clamping down for 80 seconds as a Friar shot found the back of the net but was ruled out after a review deemed that the ball did not release before the possession clock expired.
- Eccleston, who was quiet in the second half after his three quick goals, backed down his defender once more before getting space on his left side to fire low and past the goalkeeper to score his fourth of the day and to give the Hawks a 13-12 win in overtime.
