Softball Takes Opening Doubleheader From Rhode Island

Saint Joseph's opened its series with Rhode Island with a pair of wins on Friday as the Hawks won the opener, 7-4, and followed with an 11-4 victory in game two at SJU Softball Field.

How It Happened - Game One
• The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the first as Gianna Muhaw scored on a sacrifice fly by Hailey Malito. 
• Cassie Swenson tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second as she scored from third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Emily Power.
• A sacrifice fly by Becca Zawistowski scored Sydney Yoder to give the Rams a 2-1 lead later in the second.
• Rhode Island made it 3-1 in the fourth inning as Swenson scored on a sacrifice fly by Power.
• A six-run bottom of the fifth pushed the Hawks back in front, 7-3.
• A fielding error by the Rhode Island second baseman on a ball hit by Kayla Tauber allowed three runs to score as St. Joe's jumped ahead 4-3.
• Cancila doubled home Tauber to make it 5-3.
• Malito followed with a RBI triple, then came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Riley York to open a 7-3 advantage.
• Swenson scored on a sacrifice fly by Power to bring Rhode Island to within 7-4.
• Saint Joseph's kept the Rams off the scoreboard from there to earn the series-opening win.

Inside The Boxscore - Game One
• Malito went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
• Cancila was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
• Tauber and Meghan Sinkus were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.
• Emily Siler improved to 6-5 on the season with the win, allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings, while striking out five.
• Taylor Trowbridge earned the save, tossing 1.2 innings of relief.

How It Happened - Game Two 
• A bases-loaded walk by Haley McMenamin allowed Muhaw to score from third to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
• York and Sierra Fretz each followed with RBI singles to extend St. Joe's edge to 3-0.
• Tauber doubled home Muhaw to give the Hawks a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the second.
• Swenson cut Saint Joseph's lead to 4-2 in the third with a two-run double.
• Swenson came around to score to make it 4-3 on a fielding error by the Hawks later in the third.
• Hannah Hernandez tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth off a fielding error by Saint Joseph's.
• Malito put the Hawks back ahead, 5-4, in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI single that scored Tauber.
• A bases-loaded walk by Shelby LaMont scored McMenamin to open a 6-4 lead later in the fourth.
• Sinkus delivered a decisive blow for the Hawks with a grand slam to open a 10-4 lead.
• Malito added the final run in the bottom of the fifth with a RBI single that scored Tauber to make it 11-4.

Inside The Boxscore - Game Two
• Tauber was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI.
• Sinkus was 1-for-4 with her first home run of the season.
• Trowbridge picked up the victory, allowing two earned runs on two hits, while striking out two over 4.0 innings.
• Jules Scogna tossed three shutout innings of relief.
