Softball Downs Penn, 8-5

Sarah Cancila, Sierra Fretz and Haley McMenamin combined for six RBI as Saint Joseph's softball team downed Penn, 8-5, on Wednesday afternoon at SJU Softball Field.

How It Happened
• A two-out RBI single by Dana Anderson gave Penn a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Gianna Muhaw scored on a sacrifice fly by Cancila to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
• McMenamin drew a bases-loaded walk to score Kayla Tauber and give the Hawks a 2-1 lead later in the third.
Nicole Bondoc scored from third on a wild pitch to extend the Hawks' lead to 3-1.
Hailey Malito scored on a sacrifice fly by Fretz to cap a four-run third and open a 4-1 advantage.
• Dana Anderson drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Megan Huang to bring the Quakers to within 4-2 in the fifth inning.
• Sammy Fenton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Brianna Brown to score and make it 4-3.
• Katie Reagan scored on a RBI groundout by Chloe Lesko to tie the game at 4-4.
• An infield single by Julia Mortimer scored Jade Montgomery to put Penn ahead 5-4 in the fifth.
• Bondoc tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth as she stole third, and scored on an errant throw by Penn's catcher.
• Fretz followed with a RBI single that scored McMenamin and put the Hawks back out front, 6-5.
• Tauber added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as she scored on a RBI single by Cancila to open a 7-5 lead.
• Cancila made it 8-5 as she scored on a RBI single McMenamin.

Inside The Boxscore
• Tossing 1.2 innings of relief, Taylor Trowbridge earned the win to improve to 7-6 after allowing two hits and striking out two.
Emily Siler picked up her first save of the season as she tossed a scoreless seventh.
• McMenamin drew was 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
• Fretz was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
• Cancila went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
• Tauber was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
• Muhaw collected two hits and scored once.
