MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team locked up a series win on Sunday, coming away with a 12-10 victory over St. Bonaventure in a wild one at Smithson Field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in the second as
Ryan Picollo scored on a fielding error before
Ryan Cesarini hit a three-run home run into the Hawk bullpen to put SJU on top, 4-0.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (16-19 overall, 6-6 Atlantic 10) extended the lead in the third on a solo home run to dead center field by
Justin Igoe. The Hawks added three more in the fourth as Cesarini hit his second longball of the day, this one over the Bonnies' bullpen, before an RBI single from
Tim Dickinson made it an 8-0 game.
Â
•Â
Max Hitman hit an RBI double in the fifth before Cesarini beat out an infield single with two outs to bring him home and give the Hawks a 10-run cushion.
Â
• They would need every one of them as St. Bonaventure (13-21 overall, 4-8 Atlantic 10) stormed back, plating six in the sixth and four in the seventh to tie the game.
Â
• The Hawks nosed back in front in the bottom of the eighth as Dickinson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then came around to score on a double to the gap in right center by Igoe. Later in the inning, a bases-loaded wild pitch scored
Luke Zimmerman with an insurance run to put the Hawks on top by two.
Â
• The Bonnies would get the tying run to the plate, but
Luke Gabrysh worked around a two-out walk to finish off the victory.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Gabrysh allowed a run on three hits in two and two-thirds innings of relief to earn the win, while Gabe Watts retired just one of the four batters he faced and was charged with two runs in defeat.
Â
•
Ryan DeSanto got the start for the Hawks and allowed four runs – only one of them earned – on five hits in five and a third innings. Bobby Finn started for SBU and was chased in the third after allowing five runs on four hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen.
Â
• Cesarini was 4-for-6 on the day, scoring twice and notching six runs batted in. Igoe and Hitman recorded a pair of hits apiece, while Cesarini, Hitman, and Picollo each scored twice. Igoe nabbed a pair of RBI as well.
Â
• All nine hitters in each starting lineup reached base in the game.
