First Half Surge Gives Women’s Lacrosse 14-12 Road Win Against Towson

TOWSON, Md. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team earned its third win in as many games, trudging to a 14-12 win over Towson in rainy conditions on Wednesday evening.

The three-game win streak is the longest of the season for St. Joe's, who move to 7-5 on the season. Towson falls to 5-7 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emily O'Neill countered an opening Towson goal with back-to-back efforts from the free position to give St. Joe's an early 2-1 lead.
  • Bonnie Yu tried threading a pass between defenders, the ball missing the stick of Kate Fuhrman before trickling to Lisa Ross on the edge of the goalmouth. Ross faked out the keeper and fired it past her to extend the advantage to 3-1.
  • Alexa Capozzoli patiently picked out a cutting Sarah Groark before Bonnie Yu closed out the opening quarter with her first goal to give the Hawks a 5-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes.
  • Groark and Ross each grabbed their second goals of the game, trading scores with the Tigers over the opening five minutes of the quarter.
  • Emma O'Neill completed her hat trick with under a minute to play before the Hawks won the ensuing draw. Bella Miceli raced down after the win, going unmarked before firing past the keeper for her second goal on the year.
  • Towson was able to tally one back with seven seconds left in the half, starting a 5-1 run through the opening seven minutes of play in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11-9.
  • Groark was credited for her hat trick to help end the Towson run, causing pressure on the rebound from a Ross shot before the ball found its way beyond the goalkeeper and trickled into the back of the net to extend the SJU advantage to three.
  • As the hosts were able to draw the advantage to within one in the opening minute of the quarter, the Hawks struck back as Groark added her fourth of the day to grow the lead back to multiple goals.
  • Moments later, the Hawks were able to take advantage of an extra player as Ross found Capozzoli as time was expiring on the possession clock, the sophomore burying an attempt to the top left corner from eight meters out to push the lead to 14-11 with six minutes to play.
  • Despite not being able to find the back of the net, the Hawks were able to create stops on the end and help burn clock over the final stretch, Towson only able to get one goal back as the Hawks walked out as 14-12 winners for their third consecutive win.
