Men’s Lacrosse Continues Win Streak in 12-7 Win Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass - The Saint Joseph's men's lacrosse team earned its seventh consecutive win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating UMass 12-7 in the first road conference game of the season for the Crimson and Gray.

The Hawks have won the last 22 games in conference action, having not lost a conference game since the 2019 season. St. Joe's moves to 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10. UMass falls to 1-1 in the A-10, dropping to 5-5 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The opening six possessions of the game saw five saves between the two teams before the hosts were able to sneak one past St. Joe's goalkeeper Tommy Gross.
  • Only seconds later, the Hawks responded as Carter Page fired to the top left corner to level the game at 1-1.
  • An eight-minute drought was ended as Toron Eccleston buried home his effort with two seconds on the clock, tying the game at 2-2 headed into the second frame.
  • The Hawk offense burst onto the scene in the early stages of the second, started by a precision pass finding Matt Bohmer at the edge of the goalmouth, the St. Joe's all-time leader in goals finding his first of the day from close range.
  • Page found his second of the day with a sidewinding effort that fizzed along the ground before Levi Anderson went from low to high with his own effort to quickly build a 5-2 lead.
  • The advantage extended to four just seconds later, Gavin Tygh winning the face-off before taking an open lane through the alley, finishing home while taking a hit to earn his first goal of the season.
  • Jesse Jason ended a two-goal spurt from the hosts, able to find himself free at the top as the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week fired a shot to the top right corner to give St. Joe's a 7-4 halftime lead.
  • Over the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the Hawks built a lead back to 9-4 after Anderson and Page each cannoned shots into the netting.
  • UMass tallied two strikes in the final five minutes of the third quarter, cutting the SJU lead to 9-6 entering the final frame.
  • Colin Reich opened the scoring in the fourth after nearly seven minutes of scoreless action by either side, wiggling past his defender before avoiding the crease and finishing as he was falling to the turf.
  • The Minutemen looked to mount one last comeback opportunity, but Bohmer closed the door on a UMass goal with two of his own over the final four minutes of play to give the Hawks a 12-7 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Bohmer, who set the all-time program scoring record last week against High Point, followed his five-goal performance against the Panthers with his fourth hat trick of the season. Bohmer sits at 136 career goals and is four points shy of 200 career points, a feat no Hawk has ever reached.
  • Carter Page also recorded a hat trick in the win, scoring in his 37th consecutive game to hold the third-longest active streak in the country. The three goals propels Page to 129 on the year, tying the previous school record held by Mike Rastivo
  • Page recorded his 129th goal in just 47 games on the year, fewer than both Rastivo (59) and Bohmer (62).
  • Levi Anderson was the third Hawk with multiple goals, striking twice to go along with a hat trick of assists for a team-high five points. Anderson jumped into a tie for sixth-most assists in program history (71) and is five points shy of 200 career points, third all-time behind Bill Oakes '98 (199) and Bohmer (196).
  • Colin Reich and Toron Eccelston each added a goal and an assist, while Jesse Jason and Gavin Tygh closed out the scoring with a goal apiece.
  • Tygh also finished 13-21 from face-offs in the contest with seven ground balls.
  • Ryan Bradley created three turnovers for the Minutemen, recording half of the Hawks' caused turnovers.
  • The Hawks have outshot their opponents in all 10 games on the season, holding a 44-28 margin against UMass and a 22-17 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Tommy Gross produced a .588 save percentage, adding yet another double-digit save effort with 10 saves.
  • The Hawks have won the last three games against UMass after opening the series 0-2 against the Minutemen. The win today was the largest margin of victory for St. Joe's, having earned one-goal wins in each of the last two meetings prior to day. The win also marks the first win on the road against Massachusetts, the only time either team has recorded an away win in the series.

UP NEXT
  • St. Joe's returns to the road next weekend, taking on Hobart on Saturday, April 13. The game is slated for 12 p.m.
