Men's Soccer Falls to Merrimack in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team suffered an opening day defeat on Thursday evening, falling to Merrimack in a 2-1 contest on Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither side were able to generate chances in the opening half, the two teams combining for 21 fouls and just three shots, none of them on target.
  • The Hawks came out of the break looking the more dangerous of the sides, forcing three saves out of the Merrimack keeper in the opening 20 minutes.
  • The pressure finally was rewarded, Bart Kooistra opening the team's account on the year after climbing to win a header off a corner kick from Truls Brændvang, powering it into the bottom corner.
  • Despite the goal, it was the visitors that would soon build momentum as moments later a curling effort forced Lars Haavie to full stretch to parry away for a corner.
  • The Warriors struck twice in five minutes, overturning the deficit into a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes to play.
  • Blake Driehuis provided the best chance at an equalizer as the senior rose over his defender to win a header, but a defender was able to block it comfortably into the hands of the keeper.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kooistra netted his third career goal for the Hawks with his strike in the 69th minute.
  • Tommaso Rossetto finished with a game-high five shots, forcing the goalkeeper into a pair of saves.

  • St. Joe's outshot its opponent 11-5 on the night, but just a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.
