Hawks Drop Contest to #20 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team fell in defeat on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 5-0 result to ACC foe #--/20 Virginia in the first meeting between the two schools in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On its best chance in the opening stages, the Cavaliers scored in the 11th minute after a lofted pass from the touchline was volleyed from 10 yards past Lars Haavie's extended arm to put Virginia up a goal.
  • The Hawks looked to answer as Matteo Mazzotta picked up a loose ball from 30 yards out before fizzing a shot just high and wide from distance in the 17th minute.
  • The hosts doubled their lead just after 23 minutes, connecting on a set piece as an oncoming attacker was able to nod past Haavie for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Taking the two-goal lead into the half, Virginia's defense stifled the Hawk attack before being able to capitalize on the other end. Two goals in two minutes helped increase the lead to 4-0, before bending in a kick from the edge of the box off the post and into the netting to settle the game at 5-0.

  • Haavie finished with three saves in the defeat.
  • Virginia held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
