Women’s Basketball Cruises in Final Exhibition Game in Croatia

DUBROVNIK, Croatia – The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team concluded its Croatia Tour with its second dominant display in three days, taking down the Croatia Select in a 102-54 final on Friday evening.
 
The Hawks made it two wins from two on their trip, winning by an average of 53.5 points per game over the span.
 
Mackenzie Smith started the Hawks off with five of first nine points for St. Joe's, giving the visitors an early 9-7 lead. Laura knocked down the next five points of her own to force a timeout, helping spark a double-digit scoring run.
 
 On the other end of the timeout, Ziegler once again found herself open and knocked down her second three-pointer in as many possessions. Ziegler soon played provider, capping off the 13-0 run by feeding Gabby Casey in transition for an easy layup.
 
After a late three by the hosts to finish the quarter trailing 24-13, the Hawk defense once again suffocated the opposition attack. Back-to-back turnovers and finishes by Casey helped extend the advantage to 32-15. St. Joe's finished the quarter with a 16-11 advantage to push the lead to 48-26 at the half.
 
St. Joe's started the second half on a 12-1 run in the opening two minutes, forcing Croatia Select into another timeout. The Hawk offense increased the tempo, quickly running up the score to 71-35. The home side finished the third quarter on an 8-3 run, cutting the Hawk lead to 74-43 with 10 minutes to play.
 
The Hawks never slowed down, outscoring their opponent 14-4 over the opening five minutes of the frame. Leading 97-50 with two minutes to play, Kaylie Griffin knocked down her second triple of the game to push the Hawks into triple digits. St. Joe's capped off the victory with a Paula Maurina layup to take home a 102-54 victory.
 
Laura Ziegler led all scorers with 29 points on 13-20 shooting, also finishing with a game-high seven rebounds to go with four assists. Talya Brugler added 18 points, while Gabby Casey finished 6-7 (85.7%) from the field to tally 15 points with a game-high six assists. Paula Maurina added 12 points in the win.
 
St. Joe's shot 42-78 (53.8%) from the field, including a 62.5% clip from inside the three. The hawks doubled their opponents in rebounds (48-24), forcing 20 turnovers compared to just the seven from the Crimson and Gray.
