Men’s Soccer Falls on the Road to UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Saint Joseph's men's soccer team suffered defeat on Friday evening, falling 4-0 to UMBC at Retriever Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither side were able to generate dangerous chances in the opening 15 minutes, the best chance by St. Joe's coming off a flashing header off a free kick that fell kindly to the UMBC goalkeeper.
  • In the 17th minute, the Retrievers were able to take advantage of a corner to take an early lead. After the near-post runner flicked the ball to the back post, a UMBC attacker was first to the clean-up and pounced to blast the ball into the back of the net.
  • The goal opened up play a little more, Lars Haavie making his first save of the evening a minute later on a header from the left side of the box. The Norwegian keeper started the counter attack, eventually leading to a blocked shot off the attempt by Bart Kooistra on the other end of the pitch.
  • Haavie was once again called into action near the 30th minute, parrying a long-distance effort out of harm's way to keep the game at a one-goal deficit.
  • After heading into the half with the margin still at a goal, Haavie made a fine double save against the UMBC attackers to again keep the hosts at bay.
  • A flurry of chances for the Hawks came within the span of a minute an hour in, a pair of attempts being blocked before St. Joe's earned a corner kick. Tommaso Rossetto put an attempt off the ensuing set piece out wide to the left as the attack subsided.
  • Minutes later, Matteo Mazzotta collected the ball just inside the box before firing straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.
  • The hosts took advantage of a loose ball in the defensive third of the Hawks, Tyquan Stroud firing a low-driven shot to the bottom left corner.
  • Only a minute later, the Retrievers added to their tally after another quality finish found the top corner. UMBC added a fourth in the 70th minute, able to close out the game with a 4-0 score line.
