Late Goals Spring Men’s Soccer Past Temple, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA – Only 63 seconds separated two late goals for the Hawks as the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team grabbed a 2-0 victory over city rival Temple on Tuesday evening at Sweeney Field

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lars Haavie was called into action early, cleanly holding a save off a tame attempt inside the opening two minutes of the game after Temple won the first corner of the evening.
  • The Norwegian shot stopper was again called into action on the 15th minute, the Hawks being whistled for a foul in the box. Stepping up to take it, the Owl attacker out it low and to the bottom left, where Haavie met the attempt with a sprawling save to keep it out of the net. The ensuing corner forced the senior into his third save of the evening, able to get a piece of a header from six yards out to fight off the Temple attack.
  • The best attack for the Hawks in the opening 45 minutes came in the 23rd minute, Blake Driehuis' driven shot deflecting off a defender before falling comfortably into the arms of the Temple goalkeeper.
  • Haavie was the first goalkeeper called into action in the second half, making a comfortable save in the 65th minute after a shot from outside the box lofted into his arms.
  • The Hawks earned a bit of luck in the 80th minute, a curling effort from Temple finally getting the better of Haavie before lashing off the far post and back into play.
  • St. Joe's used that momentum to get on the board, striking off another set piece in the 84th minute. After the Hawks drew a foul, Truls Brændvang delivered a dangerous ball into the box. Driehuis won the initial challenge, chested it down and delivered a looping volley to the far netting to give the Hawks a late lead.
  • Finding what surely was the winner, the Hawks weren't done as Driehuis led a counterattack off a Temple corner, dishing to Daniel Zivkovic on the left side of the field. Cutting past a defender, Zivkovic was able to poke the ball past his marker before taking contact to get knocked off the ball. Before the ref could even make a decision on a penalty shot, Patrick Vani swept in and coolly curled an attempt to the bottom right corner that froze the goalkeeper and sealed the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Temple outshot the Hawks 14-7 on the night, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Hawks scored on their only two shot attempts in the second half to seal the win.
  • Patrick Vani scored his first career goal, while Daniel Zivkovic earned his first collegiate points with the assist.
  • Blake Driehuis recorded his second goal of the season, leading the team with his 16th career goal. The game-winning attempt was his sixth of his career and the first since scoring the lone goal in the 1-0 win over Dayton last season.
  • Brændvang registered his second assist of the season, also leading the team with his eighth career assist.
  • Lars Haavie collected his second clean sheet of the season, adding five saves to the night.
  • Temple held a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.
