PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Despite a late goal from the Hawks, the Saint Joseph's men's soccer team was unable to find an equalizer as it fell in a 2-1 defeat to Duquesne in Atlantic 10 play on Saturday evening.
The Hawks fall to 2-7-1 on the year and 0-2 in A-10 play, while Duquesne moves to 7-1-1 and 2-0 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks were the first team to test the goalkeepers, Blake Driehuis' effort forcing the Duquesne shot stopper low to his right to keep the attempt out of the net.
- Lars Haavie would then see his opportunity to turn away the attack, tallying a pair of saves in the opening 15 minutes as the game remained goalless.
- The Norwegian goalkeeper saved once more in the opening half, while Matteo Mazzotta and Campbell McIntyre were both unable to get chances on target in the late stages of the opening 45 minutes.
- The hosts were able to get their goal in the early action of the second half, the Dukes striking low and to the right to find the back of the netting.
- On 70 minutes, Duquesne was able to double its advantage on the board, again finding the bottom right corner to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Hawks kept fighting, as a pair of Haavie saves kept the Crimson and Gray in the game with 10 minutes remaining.
- After Patrick Vani earned a corner from his attempt on frame, the Hawks capitalized on the set piece as Blake Driehuis scored in consecutive games to cut the deficit to one goal with just over three minutes remaining.
- Despite the momentum, the Hawks were unable to find the equalizer as they fell in a 2-1 road defeat.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Duquesne held a 14-10 advantage in shots, an 8-3 margin in shots on target.
- The Dukes also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
- Haavie tied a season-high with six saves on the evening.
- Eight Hawks recorded a shot, led by a team-high three attempts from Driehuis. The senior forward scored his 17th career goal and his third of the season in the defeat.
- Matteo Mazzotta registered his second assist of the season.
