#6 Field Hockey Falls to UMass, 2-1, in Overtime

MERION STATION, Pa. – The sixth-ranked Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell to UMass, 2-1, in overtime on a dreary Friday afternoon at Ellen Ryan Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Neither team was able to find the scoreboard in the first half.  The Minutewomen controlled possession in the first quarter, forcing a pair of saves out of Marith Bijkerk.  In the second quarter, the Hawks were on the front foot and it was Myrte van Herwijnen that made two stops to keep things level.

• Saint Joseph's (7-2 overall, 1-1 Atlantic 10) broke through on a corner with five minutes to play in the third quarter.  Lily Santi inserted and then took a pass from Manu Ghigliotti to slot home her eighth goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.

• UMass (7-2 overall, 2-0 Atlantic 10) had an equalizer overturned after video review before pulling van Herwijnen for an extra attacker.  It paid off with just under three minutes to play in the fourth as Cara Falconer scooped up a rebound to tie the game.

• Elani Sherwood tallied the winner for the visitors three and a half minutes into the extra frame on an assist from Claire Danahy.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Bijkerk made a season-high six saves for the Hawks, while van Herwijnen made two for UMass.

• UMass held a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
