DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team won at Davidson for the first time in more than 50 years as the Hawks evened their conference record with a 78-61 on Tuesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Xzayvier Brown led the Hawks with 20. It was his third consecutive game with 20 or more, the first time a St. Joe's player accomplished the feat since last March.
- Erik Reynolds II scored 17, surpassing the 1,900 point mark for his career. He had five triples in the contest.
- Rasheer Fleming scored 12 with eight rebounds and three blocks.
- Justice Ajogbor recorded his second double-figure scoring game in an SJU uniform with 10 points, adding eight rebounds and three blocks.
- Anthony Finkley contributed eight. Derek Simpson scored seven with seven rebounds and six assists.
- It was the first win for Saint Joseph's at Davidson since an 85-84 victory on January 16, 1971 at Johnston Hall. It is the initial win for SJU at Belk Arena in nine tries.
- The loss was Davidson's first home setback of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It could not have been much of a better start for the Hawks who connected on eight of their first 11 shots, taking a 19-6 lead just 6:31 into the contest. Fleming was instrumental in the effort, scoring 10 points in the opening five minutes.
- The run continued into the second media timeout as Brown started to heat up, scoring six in a quick span, including a four-point play, pushing SJU on top 23-10 at the 11:31 mark.
- The Wildcats started to make a bit of noise, beginning to trade baskets, but Finkley got things going again for Saint Joseph's with back-to-back treys, extending the advantage to 17.
- After a small burst by DC cut the edge to 10, SJU got a layup and free throw by Brown and a three-pointer from Reynolds, helping the Hawks to a 43-27 lead at intermission.
- A slow start to the second half for St. Joe's allowed the Wildcats to halve the lead by the first media timeout.
- The Hawks were quick to respond as a steal and score for Derek Simpson and a triple from Reynolds pushed the lead back to 50-37 at the 14:08 mark, eventually extending the advantage to 19 with nine minutes gone in the frame.
- From that point, Saint Joseph's didn't allow Davidson to get closer than 12, maintaining the advantage for the win.
