PITTSBURGH – The Saint Joseph's men's basketball team erased a double-digit second half deficit, but were upended 85-81 in overtime by the Duquesne Dukes on Wednesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Rasheer Fleming had his sixth double-double of the season and his fourth game with 20+ points, scoring 20, pulling down 10 boards. All but three of his points came in the second half
- Xzayvier Brown also notched also was in twin figures in two categories, posting 17 with 10 assists.
- Dasear Haskins had a big game with 12 points and six rebounds.
- Justice Ajogbor had his first game in double figures for the Hawks, tallying 10. He also had six caroms and two blocks.
- Derek Simpson added 12 points.
- SJU shot 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) in the second half to force OT.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Joe's jumped out to a 7-4 lead as three-pointers from Fleming and Haskins kick-started the offense.
- Duquesne responded, scoring 12 in a row in a span of 3:46, opening a 16-7 edge at the 12:19 mark. Starting with an acrobatic driving layup by Brown, the Hawks scored nine of the next 13, chopping the lead to 20-16 in less than three minutes.
- The two teams played back and forth ball in the next several minutes with SJU slicing the lead to 29-26 on an Ajogbor layup before the Dukes took a 36-30 advantage into intermission.
- Opening the second stanza, Saint Joseph's went to work in cutting down the advantage as Fleming was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring the first seven points of the half for the Hawks, trimming the edge to 39-37 in a matter of two minutes.
- A hot stretch for the Dukes quickly brought the lead back up to 50-38, but the Hawks would not be deterred. Using a 22-9 run with nine of the points scored by Haskins, St. Joe's took its first lead since it was 7-6, going on top 60-59 with 7:14 remaining.
- From there, the teams went on the seesaw, trading shot for shot. With the game tied 73-73 and one second left, the Hawks inbounded under their own basket. The top shot rolled off the rim, forcing overtime.
- In the extra session, the Saint Joseph's took an early 80-75 lead, but Duquesne had the final say, scoring 10 of the last 11 points.
