Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Donahue Era Opens with Win as Men's Basketball Downs Lafayette

PHILADELPHIA Jaiden Glover-Toscano led four Saint Joseph's men's basketball players in double figures as the Hawks came away with an 85-76 season-opening win against the Lafayette Leopards on Monday night.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Glover-Toscano more than doubled his career-high, scoring 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also pulled in nine rebounds and had four assists.
  • Anthony Finkley netted 15, including a 7-for-8 effort from the free throw line.
  • Dasear Haskins had a strong overall game with 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks.
  • Derek Simpson scored 11 and dished a team-high five assists.
  • Saint Joseph's went 19-for-22 at the free throw line as a team and committed just seven turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Starting the game off at an incredibly fast pace, St. Joe's hit on seven of its first nine shots, taking a 16-12 lead in less than five minutes. Glover-Toscano had five points, two rebounds and two assists in the opening spurt.
  • Saint Joseph's continued to expand the lead, holding the Leopards off the board for the entire span between media timeouts. Glover-Toscano continued to impress, getting two more baskets on tip-ins coming from offensive rebounds.
  • The Hawks pushed the lead to as many as 13 at 25-12 before taking a 41-31 lead at intermission. Offensive rebounding was a key as SJU had 13 second-chance points on seven offensive boards.
  • St. Joe's scored the first bucket of the second half, but Lafayette came to life with a 10-2 run, slicing the lead to 45-41.
  • On multiple occasions, the Leopards closed to one point and had the ball, but the Hawks' defense stepped up each time, getting the needed stop as Saint Joseph's held a 58-55 lead midway through the stanza.
  • SJU started to pull away, going up by six with 9:02 to play, but Lafayette hung around, getting the deficit back to two points just two minutes later.
  • St. Joe's ended any thoughts of a Leopards' comeback, scoring nine of the next 11 points, capped by a trey from Glover-Toscano. The Hawks then went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to seal the win.
