PHILADELPHIA – Despite a resilient effort, a shorthanded Saint Joseph's women's basketball team was unable to complete a double-digit comeback as the Hawks dropped their Atlantic 10 opener to Rhode Island, 59-52, on Wednesday evening inside Hagan Arena.
FIRST QUARTER
- Four different scorers opened play for Rhode Island (7-2), helping the visitors open play on an 8-0 run. A Jill Jekot and-one disrupted the Rams' start, breaking nearly a five-minute drought to get Saint Joseph's (6-2) on the board.
- Rhian Stokes added the next three points, cutting the deficit to 8-6.
- The Hawks tied the game at 10-10 after a finish under the basket from Cecilia Kay. The Rams finished with six of the final eight points, taking a 16-12 lead into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- Aleah Snead scored back-to-back buckets for the Hawks to help cut the gap to 21-16 early in the quarter.
- The Rams countered with a 9-0 run, holding St. Joe's scoreless for nearly six minutes to grow a 14-point advantage.
- Stokes found a wide-open Kaylie Griffin under the basket to end the run, cutting the deficit to 30-18 at halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
- Stokes and Kay led the charge for the Hawks in a third quarter that saw the hosts close the Rams' lead to four, combining for 16 of the 21 points in a 21-13 frame for SJU.
- Seven of the first nine points for St. Joe's came from Stokes, knocking down three free throws after being fouled to trail 34-27.
- After Rhode Island extended the lead to nine, Kay registered baskets in back-to-back possessions, including her first 3-pointer of the season to bring the Hawks within four points.
- The teams traded points through the final 4:16 of the quarter as the Rams took a 43-39 lead into the final frame.
FOURTH QUARTER
- After the Rams increased the lead to seven, Rhian Stokes started a 7-0 run by the Hawks to level the score. A 3-pointer from Snead and a basket by Kay tied the game at 48-48.
- Rhode Island responded with its own 7-0 run over the final two minutes to take a 55-48 lead with 34 seconds left.
- The Hawks were able to close the gap to five on two occasions, but Rhode Island held on for a 59-52 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rhian Stokes led the Hawks with a career-high 16 points while sharing a team-high four assists.
- Cecilia Kay posted her best performance as a Hawk as the sophomore finished with a season-high 13 points on 66.7 percent shooting from the floor.
- Aleah Snead posted double figures for the sixth straight game with 13 points. Snead also added a team-high seven rebounds and tied for the team high with four assists.
- The Hawks finished 19-for-49 (38.8%) from the floor while shooting just 3-for-14 (21.4%) from distance. Rhode Island was 21-for-56 (37.5%) from the field and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from 3-point range.
- The Rams held a 19-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
