CONWAY, S.C. –Â
Colton Book turned in an outstanding Hawk debut on the mound on Saturday as the Saint Joseph's baseball team notched its first win of 2025, shutting out Washington, 3-0, at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (1-1) drew four walks over the first two frames, but it wasn't until the top of the third inning that the Hawks broke through.Â
Tim Dickinson led the inning off with a single before stealing both second and third. After walks to
Owen Petrich and
Joey Gale loaded the bases,
Michael Pierson ripped a two-out single to right to put the Hawks on top, 1-0.
Â
• Book kept Washington (1-1) off balance throughout his appearance, striking out seven of eight at one point and recording seven consecutive outs via the strikeout. The Huskies were held without a hit until the fourth inning.
Â
• The Hawks tacked on some insurance in the ninth.Â
Sam Meyer led off with a walk before
Alex Kelsey singled and Dickinson walked to load the bases. Two batters later,
Carson Applegate drew a free pass of his own to score Meyer and double the SJU advantage. Gale then followed with a single to score Kelsey and push the lead to 3-0.
Â
• The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting the tying run to the plate with one out via a pair of singles, but
Jackson Campbell retired the next two hitters to end the game and record his first save in the Crimson and Gray.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• The win went to Book, while Campbell notched the save. Reilly McAdams took the loss for the Huskies, allowing a run on two hits while walking six in three innings.
Â
• Book was stellar in his first start as a Hawk, fanning nine and allowing just one hit and one walk in six shutout innings. Campbell allowed three hits and added five strikeouts without walking a batter in three innings of relief.
Â
• Pierson led the way offensively with two hits, while the Hawks combined to draw 11 walks as a team. Meyer walked three times while Applegate, Dickinson, and
Dean Bergmann drew two free passes apiece; Bergmann was also hit by a pitch as well.
Â
• Meyer and
Blake Primrose made their first collegiate appearances on Saturday, while Book and Campbell made their first appearances in a Hawk uniform.
