Capozzoli Ties Program Record in Women's Lacrosse's 14-7 Rout Over Temple

PHILADELPHIA – Alexa Capozzoli matched a single-game program record with eight assists to go along with a pair of goals to help lead the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team to a 14-7 rout over Temple on Wednesday afternoon inside Howarth Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts opened with the first two goals before Saint Joseph's (1-3) got its offense started through Kate Kaptrosky, the midfielder gliding past defenders before firing to the top corner to cut the early deficit.
  • The goal sparked a 5-0 run over the final 3:39 of the quarter after Alexa Capozzoli and Maddie Yoder went unassisted to take the lead. Capozzoli played provider twice in the final 36 seconds, first finding Emma Yoder as the freshman weaved through three defenders and fired through the goalkeeper's legs. The junior then fed Sarah Groark in a tight window to help the Hawks to a 5-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
  • As it did in the first quarter, Temple (1-2) got out to a quick start in the second quarter with three goals in the opening five minutes to level the score.
  • Maddie Yoder disrupted the run, winning the draw and finishing with a sharp effort over her left shoulder into the top right corner.
  • St. Joe's was held out of the net for over nine minutes to finish the first half as the Owls leveled the game with two minutes to play to equal the score at 6-6 entering the break.
  • The Hawk defense dominated the third quarter to the tune of seven Temple turnovers to just three shots allowed, keeping the Owls off the board in the entirety of the frame.
  • Lauren Iorio began a 3-0 run in that span, scoring in the opening 3:20 to push the Hawks back in front. Goals from Kaptrosky and Emma Yoder gave St. Joe's a 9-6 lead heading into the final frame.
  • Capozzoli assisted on each of the first six goals in the second half as the 6-0 run continued with three-consecutive strikes from the Hawks to start the fourth quarter.
  • Temple finally ended the goal drought of nearly 23 minutes with 9:02 on the clock, but the tally proved to only be a consolation goal as Megan Sanelli and Alexa Capozzoli found the back of the net in the final three minutes to double up the Owls in a 14-7 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Capozzoli scored or assisted on 10 of the 14 goals for the Hawks. Her eight assists matched the program record set by Lisa Ross in last year's regular season finale against George Mason. The junior has recorded 17 assists in the last three games.

  • Maddie Yoder's three goals move her to 116 in her career, one goal shy of entering the top 10 in program history. Yoder has recorded a hat trick in three of her first four games this season. The senior added a game-high seven draw controls in the win.
  • Sarah Groark recorded her third-consecutive hat trick, finishing with three goals on four attempts.
