LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Saint Joseph's softball team continued its hot start to the season with a 5-1 win against the Radford Highlanders to open the Liberty Softball Classic on Friday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Joe's broke a scoreless time in the third inning when Hailey Peterson and Loser led off with back-to-back singles. After a groundout moved the runners up a base each, Cancila lifted a sac fly to score Peterson.
- There would be no such small ball in the fourth as SJU doubled its lead to 2-0 as Currie homered to left for her first long ball of the season.
- After the Highlanders got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, Saint Joseph's answered in the fifth as Loser singled and stole second in front of Cancila who doubled to lefty center, plating the runner to make it 3-1. Hailey Malito followed by singling through the middle to score Cancila.
- The Hawks put their final run on the board in the seventh when Fretz singled homer Sinkus, who led off the frame with her third hit of the day.
- Jenna Wagner (2-0) picked up the win with four innings, allowing just one unearned run, striking out two. Marla Freiwald earned her second save of the season with three scoreless innings.
