Softball Battles Charleston Southern and No. 20 Liberty in Saturday Action

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Three players reached base at least four times, but the Saint Joseph's softball team was upended in a doubleheader on Saturday by Charleston Southern 4-3 in the opener and No. 20 Liberty, 9-2 in the nightcap.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CSU
  • SJU fell behind early as the Buccaneers went up 4-0 after the top of the fourth inning.
  • St. Joe's got half of the runs back in the fifth. A walk to Kayla Tauber and a single by Cancila put runners on the corners. On a play where Cancila broke for second, the throw by the catcher was off the mark, allowing Tauber to score.
  • Three batters later, York singled to right, plating Cancila to make it 4-2.
  • Leading off the sixth, the Hawks drew closer as Hailey Peterson hit her first collegiate homer, cutting the edge to 4-3.
  • Saint Joseph's battled in the seventh, but were unable to push the tying run across.
  • Freiwald continued her strong early season effort, going five innings in relief, striking out three and surrendering just one run.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NO. 20 LIBERTY
  • The Hawks got on the board in the third inning as Kasi Loser, Tauber and Cancila all walked in front of Malito, who lifted a sac fly to bring home Loser and cut the Flames' lead to 3-1.
  • St, Joe's pushed across another run in the fifth. More patience led to the offense as Tauber, Cancila and Malito all walked, leading to a single from Meghan Sinkus.
  • Tauber, Cancila and Malito all reached base twice in the game.
