Baseball Falls at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team mounted a rally late, but ultimately fell to Rutgers, 12-6, at Bainton Field on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rutgers (4-4) took the lead on a two-out, three-run home run by Nick Tomasetto in the bottom of the first.  The Scarlet Knights extended the lead to 6-0 on a sacrifice fly by Brennan Hyde and a two-run single by RJ Johnson in the third.

• Saint Joseph's (2-6) got on the board in the fourth as Sam Meyer and Blake Primrose hit back-to-back to doubles to make it a 6-1 game.

• A single by Ty Doucette and another three-run shot by Tomasetto pushed the Rutgers lead to 10-1 after four.

• Meyer doubled once again with one away in the sixth; two batters later, Dean Bergmann went deep to left to make it a 10-3 game.

• Tomasetto added an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth before JT Thompson singled home a run in the seventh to extend the hosts' advantage to 12-3.

• The Hawks put together a rally in the top of the eighth.  Joey Pagano led the frame off with a single before Meyer walked and Primrose collected a single of his own to load the bases with nobody out.  Three batters later, Colin Myers singled home a pair before Alex Kelsey followed with an RBI ground rule double.  Tim Dickinson then drew a walk to reload the bases, but Rutgers' Dillon Ryan was able to escape the jam without further injury, and the Hawks were unable to tally in the ninth.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Andrew Rondini tossed two innings of relief, allowing a run on two hits, to earn the win, while Matt Fitzgibbon started and took the loss for SJU.

• Primrose was 3-for-5 for the Hawks, scoring once and driving in a run, while Meyer and Kelsey each collected two hits.  Meyer also scored three times on the day, while Bergmann and Myers posted multi-RBI games.

• Bergmann's longball was the first of his collegiate career.
