Softball Opens Play at Mizuno Showdown

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Saint Joseph's softball team closed out the month of February with a pair of games at the Mizuno Showdown on the campus of the University of North Carolina. The Hawks fell in a heartbreaker 5-4 to Harvard in the opener before a 18-3 setback against the host Tar Heels in the second game.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Meghan Sinkus had a big day with four RBI. Her four driven in during the first game tied a career-high, matching her efforts from March 29, 2024 against Rhode Island and March 11, 2023 versus Radford.
  • Jenna Currie homered and drove in three.
  • Taylor Trowbridge tossed her second complete game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HARVARD
  • Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Hawks got a run back as Meghan Sinkus lifted a sac fly to center, scoring Kayla Tauber who walked to lead off the frame.
  • SJU took the lead in the fifth as a single by Tauber and a walk to Hailey Malito had two on for Sinkus, who doubled home to runners to make it 3-2 St. Joe's.
  • The Crimson knotted the game up in the bottom of the inning and took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Saint Joseph's used patience to rally in the seventh. With one out, Sarah Cancila and Malito walked and each advanced a base on a passed ball. Once again Sinkus came through with a sac fly, plating Cancila to tie the contest.
  • Harvard scored with two outs in the bottom of the frame to end the game.
  • Sinkus drove in all four runs for the Hawks. Malito and Tauber reached base three times apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA
  • After falling behind early, the Hawks clawed back in the second. Sinkus singled and Riley York walked. Two batters later, Currie hit her second homer of the season to pull the game to within a run.
  • From there, the Tar Heels methodically pulled away.
  • In the circle, Marla Freiwald and Jenna Wagner combined for three strikeouts.
