ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener on Friday evening, falling in a 16-9 defeat to #18 Navy inside Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawk defense held strong for the opening seven minutes, but Navy eventually found its way through after recording 15 of the first 16 shots in the contest. The Mids found a flurry of goals in the final eight minutes of the frame to take a 6-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.
- The hosts scored early in the second frame before Kate Kaptrosky got the Hawks on the board with her first career goal as a Hawk.
- Lauren Iorio and Maddie Yoder split a goal from the Mids to cut the deficit back within five before two Navy goals in 90 seconds gave the hosts a 10-3 lead.
- Kaptrosky tallied her second of the evening to draw within six headed into the halftime break.
- Emma Yoder scored on her debut only 37 seconds into the second half before the Hawks struck the netting moments later through another Yoder strike, this one coming from Maddie to cut the deficit within four.
- After Navy tallied its first goal of the half, Maddie Yoder started a 3-0 run with goals from Alexa Capozzoli and Sarah Groark giving the Hawks their lowest deficit since the opening quarter at 11-9.
- The momentum shifted with a goal from the hosts in the final minute of the third quarter. The Mids carried the energy into the final 15 minutes, scoring all four goals in the frame to fend off the second half comeback attempt from the Hawks in a 16-9 win on their home turf.
GAME NOTES
- Maddie Yoder finished with a team-high in goals (3) and draw controls (4).
- Kaptrosky finished with two goals in her St. Joe's debut.
- Capozzoli added a goal and an assist on the night, while junior Kate Fuhrman registered a pair of assists in the defeat.
- Concordia finished with 13 saves in the defeat on a .448 save percentage.
- The Mids outshot the Hawks 40-17, holding a 29-14 advantage in shots on goal.
- Navy edged St. Joe's with a 14-12 margin on the draw, forcing 17 Hawk turnovers and six failed clear attempts.
