Women’s Lacrosse Falls Short in Comeback Bid to Arizona State, 13-12

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team nearly overcame a six-goal deficit, but were unable to complete the comeback in a 13-12 defeat to Arizona State on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maddie Yoder scored the lone goal for the Hawks in the opening 15 minutes as Arizona State struck five times to take an early lead.
  • Two quick goals from the Sun Devils pushed the advantage to 7-1 before Megan Sanelli found the back of the net to help fuel a quick 3-0 spurt.
  • Goals from Yoder and Riley Miller cut the deficit to three before the hosts responded with two goals in 1:20.
  • Yoder finished off her hat trick with 1:30 to play in the opening half to trim the deficit to 9-5 at the break.
  • After Arizona State opened the scoring in the second half, Alexa Capozzoli tallied two assists to Sarah Groark before turning scorer over four and a half minutes. Kate Fuhrman added to the tally, nearly erasing the deficit at 10-9 with three minutes to play in the third frame.
  • The teams traded goals over the final 18 minutes of play, beginning with an ASU goal to push the lead back to two before entering the fourth quarter.
  • Yoder and Capozzoli each struck the back of the net in the final quarter, but Arizona State responded to each goal with a tally of its own.
  • Emma Yoder cut the deficit to 13-12 with 2:32 to play before Jorden Concordia kept the hosts out of the net with her 12th save of the game to give the Hawks the final possession.
  • The Sun Devil defense prevented the Hawks from leveling the score, forcing a turnover and holding onto the one-goal lead as time expired.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Maddie Yoder paced the Hawks with four goals on the afternoon, moving her total to a team-high 17 on the season.
  • Capozzoli recorded a pair of goals and assists on the afternoon, tallying her second multi-goal game of the year. Capozzoli now sits by herself it sixth all-time in program history with 67 career assists.
  • Miller posted a career-high three points with a goal and two assists.
  • Concordia finished with 12 saves on a .480 save percentage. Concordia is one save shy of becoming the new all-time leader in saves in program history.
