Women’s Lacrosse Cruises to 16-9 Win Over George Mason

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team scored the opening 11 goals of the afternoon to burst to a 16-9 win over George Mason on Saturday at Sweeney Field.
 
The Hawks move to 4-6 (3-0 Atlantic 10) after collecting their third-consecutive win. George Mason falls to 5-5 (0-3 Atlantic 10).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hawks took an early two-goal lead after individual efforts from Maddie Yoder and Alexa Capozzoli started the fireworks inside the opening three minutes of the game.
  • Kate Fuhrman collected the first of her five points on the afternoon after tucking home her effort from Ellie Webb's feed.
  • Fuhrman turned provider with back-to-back assists to Yoder and Sarah Groark before registering her second goal of the afternoon to put the Hawks up 6-0 within 10 minutes.
  • Elizabeth McGurk got on the score sheet for her second time in as many games before goals from Riley Miller and Groark in the final 80 seconds of the first quarter gave the Hawks a 9-0 lead at the intermission.
  • Webb opened the scoring out of the break with her first of the game off a free-position attempt. Groark's hat trick with 9:30 remaining in the second quarter extended the lead to 11-0 before George Mason was able to end a 23-minute drought to open the game.
  • Olivia McCloskey fired home her first goal of the season after dishing two assists midweek against George Washington.
  • Yoder became the second Hawk to register a first half hat trick with 30 seconds remaining to give St. Joe's a 13-1 lead at the break.
  • The Patriots recorded two of the first three goals in the third quarter, but Groark and Yoder continued to shine with a goal each in the last two minutes of the third frame to push the Hawks to a 13-goal advantage with 15 minutes to play.
  • George Mason held the Hawks scoreless over the final quarter, finishing the game on a 6-0 consolation run to cut the final tally to a 16-9 deficit.
 
 
GAME NOTES
  • Alexa Capozzoli recorded a team-high six points to improve on her already dominant campaign, adding a goal and five assists in the win. Her 31 assists on the season are tied for seventh-most in single-season history for the Crimson and Gray. Capozzoli's 77 career assists move her into fourth place in program history.
  • Kate Fuhrman finished with two goals and three assists on the afternoon, sitting at 99 career points in her time on Hawk Hill.
  • Sarah Groark and Maddie Yoder each tallied four goals in the win. Groark netted her fifth hat trick of the year and has scored in all 10 games this season, while Yoder added her seventh game of the season with 3+ goals.
  • Ellie Webb produced a career-high three points in the win, notching her first multi-goal game of the year to go along with an assist.
  • Riley Miller has now scored in each of her last six games after a goal and an assist against the Patriots.
  • Elizabeth McGurk scored her second-career goal after recording her first goal for the Hawks against GW on Wednesday.
  • Bella Miceli steadied the Hawk defense with a team-high three caused turnovers. The senior has matched her season-high with eight draw controls in each of the last two games.
  • Jorden Concordia made seven saves and gave up just four goals in 50 minutes of action. Annalise Thaler recorded her first career save in her 10 minutes of relief duty in the fourth quarter.
  • The Hawks have allowed fewer than 10 goals in each of their wins on the three-game win streak to open A-10 play.
  • Head Coach Alex Kahoe recorded her 101st career win, the Hawks earning their fourth-consecutive win over George Mason.

The Hawks stay in Philly for an Atlantic 10 contest on 20th and Olney, taking on La Salle on Saturday, March 22. First draw is slated for 12 p.m.
