MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team rallied from an early deficit, but the Hawks ultimately fell to Delaware, 7-4, at Smithson Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Delaware (10-9) took the early lead on a first-inning single by Evan Bouldin. The Blue Hens extended the lead with three more in the third on RBI singles by Brett Walmsley and LT Cockrill and a wild pitch.
Â
• Saint Joseph's (6-13) started to claw back into the game in the fourth.Â
Carson Applegate started things off with a double down the right field line; after moving to third on a ground ball by
Owen Petrich, he came in to score on a fielder's choice by
Aidan Duda.
Â
• The Hawks tied it with a three-spot of their own in the fifth.Â
Sam Meyer and
Alex Kelsey were each hit by a pitch with one out; two batters later, Applegate singled home Meyer to make it a two-run game. A failed pickoff attempt then moved the runners up a base for Petrich, who singled them home to tie the game.
Â
• Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Blue Hens would pick up a run in the seventh on a fielder's choice and two more in the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Andrew Amato and Ayden Frey. The Hawks would get the tying run to the plate in the ninth but could not complete a second comeback.
Â
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Dylan Bryan tossed two and a third shutout innings of relief to earn the win for Delaware, while
Luke Parise allowed a run on two hits in two innings to take the loss.
Â
• Applegate led the Hawks with two hits and two runs scored on the day.
