Baseball Falls to Richmond, 12-10

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Saint Joseph's baseball team rallied back from a big deficit at Smithson Field on Sunday but ultimately fell short of a comeback, falling to Richmond by a 12-10 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Richmond (20-4 overall, 4-2 Atlantic 10) took the lead in the top of the first on a single, an error, and a fielder's choice.

• Saint Joseph's (8-14 overall, 3-3 Atlantic 10) answered right away in the bottom of the frame.  Alex Kelsey and Carson Applegate started things off with singles to put two on for Owen Petrich; Petrich took Spiders starter Jackson Hinchliffe deep to right for an opposite-field three-run home run to tie the game.

• The Spiders went back in front in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout.  The visitors extended the lead in the third on a grand slam by Jack Arcamone before an Aaron Whitley groundout in the fifth made it a 10-3 game.

• The Hawks put a six-spot on the board in the bottom of the sixth to get back in the game.  Aidan Duda walked and moved up on a wild pitch before a Sam Meyer single and another wild pitch brought him home.  Bryce Gaines and Kelsey followed with walks of their own to load the bases for pinch hitter Colin Myers, who drew another free pass to force in Meyer.

•  Applegate followed with a two-run double to cut the margin to three before Myers scampered home on another wild pitch.  After a walk to Petrich, Blake Primrose laced a single to right to score Applegate and make it a 10-9 game.

• DJ Pacheco gave the Spiders some breathing room with a two-run home run in the eighth.

• Dean Bergmann was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth before a Kelsey single and a Myers walk loaded the bases and brought the winning run to the plate.  Applegate reached on a fielder's choice that scored Bergmann, and the Spiders would end the threat there.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Brian Reinke was credited with the win after tossing four shutout innings in relief.  Jackson Campbell was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in one inning.  Neither starter figured in the decision, as both Hinchliffe and SJU's Nathan Stein allowed three runs in one inning of work.

• Kelsey and Applegate recorded two hits and two runs scored apiece; Kelsey also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch twice, reaching base five times on the day.  Applegate and Petrich each collected three RBI.

• The Hawks matched a season high, drawing 11 walks on the day.

• Gaines made his collegiate debut on Sunday.
