RICHMOND, Va. –
Owen Petrich broke a 5-all tie with a solo home run in the top of the ninth to lead the Saint Joseph's baseball team past VCU, 6-5, at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (10-16 overall, 4-5 Atlantic 10) loaded the bases in the top of the second and started the scoring off when Petrich came in on a wild pitch.
• The Hawks extended their lead in the fourth as Petrich led off with a single and
Tim Dickinson followed with a two-run home run.
• VCU (7-20 overall, 2-7 Atlantic 10) started to claw back into the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Sean Swenson.
• The Rams initially drew within a run on a double by Jacob Lee, but upon review, Nate Kirkpatrick was called out at the plate for causing a dangerous collision with Duda. Adrian Jimenez then singled home Lee to make it a 3-2 game.
• The Hawks responded in the sixth as
Alex Kelsey drew a two-out walk before
Carson Applegate went deep to push the SJU lead to 5-2.
• The hosts would get one in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Kirkpatrick before putting two on in the seventh but coming up empty. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, the Rams would not come up empty in the eighth as RBI singles by Lee and Will Henson tied the game.
• In the ninth, Petrich hit a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left to put the Hawks back in front;
Sam Greer then sent the Rams down in order to close the door on the series finale.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
• Greer allowed two hits in an inning and two-thirds of shutout relief to earn the win, while James McGrady allowed a run on one hit, the home run by Petrich, in three innings to take the loss.
•
Nathan Stein got the start for Saint Joseph's, allowing three runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings for a no decision. Nick Freers allowed three runs on four hits in a three-inning start for VCU.
• Petrich went 3-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored, a home run, and a run batted in on Sunday to lead the Hawks. Applegate and Dickinson each collected a pair of RBI on their home runs.
