PHOENIX – A three-run sixth inning helped propel the Saint Joseph's softball team to a win in its final game of the Purple Classic, defeating UNLV 3-1. SJU dropped its opener of the day against New Mexico, 10-0.
The game against the Rebels was scoreless into the sixth as
Jules Scogna and Amelia Weber locked in a pitchers' duel.
SJU broke through in the bottom of the sixth as
Kayla Tauber walked to lead off the frame.
Sarah Cancila singled, followed by a sacrifice by
Hailey Malito to put runners on second and third.
Meghan Sinkus came up and grounded a ball back to the circle, but a fielding error allowed all runners to score, pushing the Hawks up 3-0.
UNLV got a run in the top of the seventh, but
Marla Freiwald locked the game down for her third save.
Scogna tossed six innings in the contest, surrendering just one run, striking out two. Cancila had three hits for SJU.
St. Joe's comes back to the east coast to face Delaware on Wednesday, March 12. First pitch from Newark is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
