PHILADELPHIA –
Sarah Groark's goal midway through the second overtime session powered the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse team to a 9-8 win over Davidson in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Saint Joseph's (2-6 overall, 1-0 Atlantic 10) got off to a hot start as
Alexa Capozzoli took a feed from
Kate Fuhrman and put it home less than two minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Fuhrman fed
Riley Miller to double the lead before
Ellie Webb scored at the 9:48 mark to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.
• Davidson (3-3 overall, 0-1 Atlantic 10) got on the board late in the first quarter but took control in the second. Five consecutive goals gave the Wildcats a 6-4 lead before
Maddie Yoder broke the run with 1:45 to go in the second quarter. Davidson would answer 40 seconds later to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
• Capozzoli would return the favor to Fuhrman, who got on the board herself to cut the deficit to two a little more than four minutes into the second half. Groark found the net with 14 seconds to go in the third quarter to make it a one-goal game heading into the final stanza.
•
Emma Yoder drew the Hawks level in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats went back in front through Devyn Martinez with just under 10 minutes to play.
• The Hawks spent the remainder of the frame seeking an equalizer, and it finally came when
Maddie Yoder scored with just five seconds on the clock to send the game to overtime.
• Davidson collected the only two shots in the first extra period, forcing
Jorden Concordia into a pair of saves. In the second overtime, Davidson's Kayla Joyce stymied an early attempt by Fuhrman before
Maddie Yoder fed Groark for the game-winner.
